And it was a quarter-to-10 and (musician) John McDaniel came in and said that his partner, they live down there, had just seen a 747 fly into the Twin Towers. And I turned on the ''Today'' show and said, ''You are wrong. It was a private plane probably, and it would be on here.'' And then they said, ''We are just going to break in and say, ''There was a small commuter plane that crashed into the Twin Towers.'' I said, ''You see? That''s the thing John, you get. . .'' and he was crying. ''You get very upset.'' And then I turned back and you saw the other plane hit. There is a great Joni Mitchell song that she sings. ''No tanks have ever rumbled down these streets. No grown-up, scary man has ever frightened me.'' We, in America, have been blessed. We have never seen war on our own soil, unless you count Hawaii. I am saying continental United States. And it was a day, I think, has changed the world. And I remember a level of fear or numbness. I went downstairs, and there were a lot of pregnant people on our staff. I was like, ''Everyone who can''t get out of New York, please go up to my townhouse.'' And I went to go get my kids, my son from school. And I went outside and there was a limo waiting for somebody, and I said, ''Can you take me to get my kid?'' And he did, and then brought me to the house and there were a 100 people in our townhouse. And I got into bed with (her son) Parker and as soon as the tower fell, I fell asleep. It was almost like the computer of my brain and my psyche and my heart couldn''t take it anymore. It was like I was out. And I think everything changed. And I remember seeing armed machine-gunned men in fatigues on the George Washington bridge. And I thought, ''What has happened to America?''\"\u003cbr/\u003e3. And she kept saying every night, ''Did the President put out the fires yet?'' And I was like, ''Not yet honey.'' And she kept saying, ''And all those people got smushed like a pancake.'' And I was like, ''That''s right, and that is very sad.'' And Parker said, ''I want to meet the firemen, mommy. I have to talk to a firemen.'' So, we went to a firehouse in the theatre district. And the bagpipes. To this day, bagpipes use to remind me of my mother''s funeral, of Kennedy''s funeral. There were bagpipes every day. Lots of firemen are Irish right. So, we go into this firehouse and they had lost a lot of men. And they are all in their dress blues, and my little blond-haired boy walks in. I am not emotionally in the best place at this time. Neither was anyone else. I saw an older woman in a housecoat walking in a walk-up right near, with money, and handing it to the fireman. Like, ''Take this for the fund.'' And my son walks to this huge man, who was in the back just staring. And he pulls on his coat. And I''m about 30 feet away, but I am watching and listening. And he says, ''I''m sorry that your friends died trying to save everybody.'' And this man picked him up, put his arms around him and starts to sob. And I will never forget it for the rest of my life.'' Like it was just like a moment of pure grace that you see a little child who doesn''t quite understand being able to help this guy who was suffering so much. Everyone always says, ''Where were you when Kennedy was killed, or where were you when . . . ? But if you were in New York City that day, it is a wound that still, so easily opened. Just even now, right? Who the hell thought that was where you were going with that ''One last question.'' I thought for sure it was going to be about Donald Trump. (Laughs.) But I can instantly be back there. I instantly remember it and everyone saying, ''Oh they . . .'' Everybody panics. Everyone says, ''They are hitting the buildings. The landmark buildings. They are going to hit 30 Rock. They are going to hit . . .'' This was the buzz in the building. And then fear became a tool to be used to control and manipulate everyone. And it became very, very messy. For us as a world. For us as a race of humans. We kind of fell prey to fear in a way that other countries have had to live with constantly. Right?\"\u003cbr/\u003e5.
