We've seen a number of press reports  that were talking about thousands earlier on in the war when the Taliban were giving their reports. It is exceedingly difficult to get into an area immediately, find out exactly what the casualties were and come up with something one feels confident with by way of an estimate. Almost consistently the numbers we have been able to find have been less than the initial reports, like the World Trade Centre where it was many many thousands and it dropped from 10 or 12 thousand to 3,000 -still a terrible number but a fraction.\"\u003cbr/\u003e3. They have weapons of mass destruction, their appetite for additional weapons is enormous. Rumsfeld leaving the podium\u003cbr/\u003eUS Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld described the US military effort in Afghanistan as a success on Monday, despite acknowledging the tragedy of civilian casualties.\u003cbr/\u003eRumsfeld told reporters in Washington there were fewer civilian in the war against the Taliban than in any other war in modern history. But the New York Times has disputed the official numbers of civilian casualties. Rumsfeld claimed there was no way of accurately counting how many innocent lives have been lost in the conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eRumsfeld acknowledged that the US military was now providing security for Hamid Karzai, the head of Afghanistan's two year transitional government. But he said that the arrangement was expected to be short-term.\u003cbr/\u003eRumsfeld went on to comment on the continued search for Al-Qaida terrorists, saying that he didn't know whether the group's leader Osama Bin Laden was alive or dead. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he did say that Pakistani authorities had apprehended several suspected al-Qaida officials in the last two weeks, including one man who might have been a top finance official for the terror network.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Secretary of Defence also defended US President George Bush's controversial speech labelling Iraq, North Korea and Iran as the 'Axis of Evil'. \u003cbr/\u003eHe suggested that in the future historians would view the statement as the beginning of an international dialogue on human rights in those
