In Portsmouth they've used the Department of  Social Security offices opposite the gay pub there to put cameras in and investigate  that way.  Two R-A-F officers who were under suspicion last year were followed for four  to six weeks by teams of surveillance operatives.  So, I mean, the level of expertise and  money and stuff that they use to try and track people down is really quite unbelievable.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Edmund Hall, Journalist\u003cbr/\u003eThe M-O-D would not comment on the subject, saying its policy is clear.\u003cbr/\u003eIt says lesbians and gay men are banned from serving because their \"behaviour can  cause offence, polarise relationships, induce ill-discipline\" and damage morale and  efficiency.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the rest of NATO do allow homosexuals to serve in the forces, although the U- S prevents them from either being out or from being asked about their sexuality.\u003cbr/\u003eSo when British personnel serve in multinational forces, such as the peacekeeping  operation in Bosnia, they are not allowed to be homosexual, whilst their colleagues are.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They're doing the same job at the same time alongside people who can be openly  lesbian or gay, but if their colleague from Britain - or indeed America - admitted they  were lesbian or gay they'd immediately lose their job.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Edmund Hall, Journalist\u003cbr/\u003eGraeme Grady is one of four people taking the court action.\u003cbr/\u003eHe now lives in London with his partner, but last year he worked for the British Defence  Intelligence Liaison Staff in Washington D-C.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite having virtually the highest level of security clearance available and an  \"exemplary\" service record, he was sacked when the M-O-D heard he was gay.\u003cbr/\u003e\"On the 16th of May last year I was told to report to the Embassy for a meeting at one  o' clock in the afternoon which I did go to. When I got there, all I was told was there was  a problem with my security clearances and I was going to have to go back to England. They looked inside books, they  looked inside my photo album. Every photo which had a man on there, they said is he  gay, is he homosexual. Even inside CD covers, they opened up the CDs and they took  the CD covers out to see if there were any messages there - things like that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Graeme Grady, Sacked Gay Serviceman\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Graeme's discharge certificate, which has to be shown to potential employers.\u003cbr/\u003eIt says his services were no longer required as he could not meet service obligations  due to circumstances beyond his control.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gay men and lesbian, who are taking the action, hope they can change the M-O- D's policy which led to 260 homosexuals losing their jobs over the past four years.\u003cbr/\u003eThis figure excludes those who were given the chance to resign or left of their own free  will.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the high cost of training, Hall estimates the M-O-D's policy has cost the taxpayer  between 40 and 50 (m) million pounds since 1990.\u003cbr/\u003eThe judgement is expected mid-week and the case could then be heard in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003e12 May 1995:\u003cbr/\u003e1.
