Wide of aircraft flying directly overhead\u003cbr/\u003eSome forty three million people have flown out of the world's busiest international airport so far this year, but up to a quarter of them have a devastating fear of flying.\u003cbr/\u003eA few hundred of them are now taking to the skies again above London Heathrow, this time to confront their terror.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first moment of crisis comes just minutes before take off.\u003cbr/\u003eCharlotte Gunns is overcome by her fear and pleads with the cabin crew to let her leave the plane.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this is no ordinary flight.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cabin staff are specially trained to deal with people with an acute fear of flying.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because every passenger on this flight is convinced they could die at any moment.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery step of the way the pilot explains precisely what is happening.\u003cbr/\u003eEach noise made by the engines and every movement is given a detailed explanation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fear of flying according to psychologists is a direct result of our ancestry. \u003cbr/\u003eFear was essential to our survival.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fright, fight, flight response is automatic and immediate. Even before we're even aware of it our body starts responding.\u003cbr/\u003eOur breathing changes, we hyperventilate and the level of oxygen increases to keep us blindly running away from the point of danger.\u003cbr/\u003eThe body responds in the same way as an animal pursued by a predator.\u003cbr/\u003eThat response has already persuaded two people to disembark before take off.\u003cbr/\u003eSix people could not bring themselves to even step onto the aircraft.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 93 that remain have spent the whole day preparing.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore they are even shown a plane they spend hours being briefed by pilots, cabin crew and a psychologist.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're told in detail how an aircraft functions.\u003cbr/\u003eThis aims to bestow on them a sense of being in control because they know what is supposed to happen when a plane takes off and flies and what happens when there is turbulence, or other disturbances.\u003cbr/\u003eA screen displays a raft of statistics showing that we are less likely to have an accident in the air than we are on a road.\u003cbr/\u003eA physiological explanation of what happens to our bodies during an anxiety attack, or a phobia.\u003cbr/\u003eResident psychologist Dr. Keith Stoll has been helping people with a fear of flying for the past twenty years.\u003cbr/\u003eStoll is always on the flights to counsel sufferers and he's well acquainted with the symptoms everyone's experiencing.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says\"These feelings include sometimes feelings of tingling in our extremities, we get palpitations, we get other symptoms all of which come together as a rather unpleasant experience and therefore those people on the plane are struggling with a collection of very, very noxious and unpleasant symptoms.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe symptoms are meant to be as difficult and uncomfortable as possible to keep us running blindly from danger because if we looked back we would slow down, or fall over and perish.\u003cbr/\u003eStoll says the aim is to confront your fear not distract yourself from it, so alcohol is forbidden and tranquilisers are discouraged as a prop.\u003cbr/\u003eRonan O'Gorman is an engineer.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's happy to look out of the window and appreciate the view.\u003cbr/\u003eO'Gorman makes a living by climbing high radio and television masts.\u003cbr/\u003eWith that he has absolutely no fear.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the claustrophobia of being contained in an aircraft cabin that has made flying to difficult for him.\u003cbr/\u003eWith family in Italy and Ireland he regularly flies, but he says \"the problem got worse and worse and worse and worse and flying went from being uncomfortable to being difficult and then went to almost impossible, to the point where I couldn't fly unless I had medication, diazepam normally.\"\u003cbr/\u003eO'Gorman says \"three weeks ago went on a flight without diazepam and the outward flight was fine, because my mind was occupied with what I was going there to do, the backward flight was extremely unpleasant, so I decided the time had come to do something about it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eStoll says claustrophobics suffer so much for on flights because their bodies are telling them to escape, but they can hardly jump out of the plane. \u003cbr/\u003eThe course organisers say the course is more effective if you book a full flight as soon after the course as possible, so you can remember and put it into practice all you've been told.\u003cbr/\u003eAnn Michelle Vignaroli is hoping to get to Australia this year, although she admits that from Europe it's a very long journey.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople don't relax just because you tell them to. \u003cbr/\u003eThey respond better if they're given the techniques that help them do this.\u003cbr/\u003ePart of this is the feeling of being in control.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there are other techniques that Stoll teaches.\u003cbr/\u003eHe argues that breathing is key to being able to control our bodies and our minds.\u003cbr/\u003eStoll gets passengers in danger hyperventilating need to regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in their bodies.\u003cbr/\u003eHe advises \"breathing into a paper bag, or holding your breath will increase the levels of carbon dioxide and this will ultimately combat the symptoms and allow us to regain control.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Stoll maintaining tension in certain groups of large smooth muscles \u003cbr/\u003e\"The suggestion is that the feedback that certain groups of these muscles are under tension, is what seems to keep the anxiety going. So, if you can challenge that, then in that case you can actually change the response.\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe mood among the passengers who've made it through the flight varies, from jubilation to relief and exhaustion.\u003cbr/\u003eGunns, so distraught at the start of the flight ,is now happy she stayed on.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's a languages teacher and needs to take her pupils on foreign trips.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"as you saw I was really nervous about flying and didn't know if I was going to stay on and then, okay I'm not saying I love it now, but I've made progress in the fact that I've stayed on and yes, definitely improved.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAviatours is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary and is now sponsored by British Airways.\u003cbr/\u003eIt claims 45-thousand people have been through the course and it's planning to launch a club class service in New York this year.\u003cbr/\u003eMost give feedback within a couple of months.\u003cbr/\u003eBut assessing just how successful it is in the long term is far more difficult.\u003cbr/\u003eStoll says there is now a wealth of information to be gleaned from the work they've done and it's time to investigate whether people benefit long term.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"we assume from the feedback we're getting and the postcards we get from all over the world that a huge majority of them maintain their progress to a certain extent. I'm not quite sure\".\u003cbr/\u003eStoll says \"I'd like to be able to say they do as well afterwards as they did on the course, or the day after the course. done with it and that's our problem with long term.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe psychologist says we don't know all the complications that have brought people here, there may be a combination of neuroses that prevent them from overcoming their anxieties.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the end of the year 172 million people will have flown in and out of London Heathrow, up to a quarter of them will not be looking forward
