Mid of Schaefer playing his musical desk\u003cbr/\u003eA musical desk, a kissing box and a checkerboard maze - these are just a few of the intricate wooden designs made by an American artist.\u003cbr/\u003eHe originally dreamed up tricks that would stump his dad, now he makes wooden gadgets for everyone that loves a puzzle.\u003cbr/\u003eClose a drawer, hear a note play.\u003cbr/\u003eOpen and close several drawers, and you''ll begin to unlock the secrets of a unique musical wooden desk.\u003cbr/\u003eThis summer, master woodworker Kagen Schaefer expects to finish crafting what he says may be the most complicated desk ever made:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The most complicated thing I''ve ever made. It could be the most, I don''t know, it could be the most complicated desk in the world as far as I know.\" (laughs)\u003cbr/\u003eA New York film director commissioned the 33-year-old former Colorado College math major to make a musical desk with hidden mysteries that can only be revealed by those who can solve its many puzzles.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a musical score, but it is well and truly hidden says Schaefer:\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is an actual wooden score of sheet music that is broken into pieces and hidden in various parts of the drawers. So, it turns out you actually have to, you don''t even know what tune to play until you assemble that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSchaefer spent the last four years designing and making the desk in his Denver workshop. It has cost about as much as a luxury car.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s constructed from ebony, Bastogne walnut and pink ivory.\u003cbr/\u003eNo electronics are involved - this musical desk works just with flowing air.\u003cbr/\u003eThe desk has eight square drawers that act like bellows on a pipe organ, so when a drawer is pushed in, it emits a tone. \u003cbr/\u003eEach drawer not only plays a note on a pipe organ in the back but also moves an array of switches into different positions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"switchboard\" resets itself on every wrong note, but if the correct tune of 12 notes is played, the final puff of air travels through the board to unlock a secret drawer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe journey begins with a concealed button for a secret panel. \u003cbr/\u003eThat opens to reveal a puzzle of sliding tiles which, when arranged in the right pattern, allow another drawer to open. \u003cbr/\u003eIn total the desk contains more than 20 puzzles. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Some of the drawers are easier than others,\" says Schaefer.  \"Generally, everyone makes (it and) signs their name in the easy drawer, and the harder drawers have fewer names.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSchaefer has made a name for himself by creating smaller but still complex wooden puzzles, each with its own complicated twists and turns:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Everything I make is some form of a container with a pretty intricate puzzle that keeps it locked. So, when you solve these different wooden puzzles that I design, you can unlock secret drawers or boxes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe puts as much energy into the look of the puzzles as the function and mechanics of them.\u003cbr/\u003eOne box he made requires a kiss to open.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It''s sort of a magic trick because you''re not actually kissing it,\" says Schaefer as he pressed his lips to a small black and brown rectangular block of wood.  \"You''re sucking the air out of it.  It only unlocks when it has a vacuum.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSchaefer has carefully honed his own style in his craftsmanship over the years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woodworker says all his designs are carved from solid, natural wood, and nothing is ever processed before he gets his hands and tools on it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is no plywood, even,\" says Schaefer, who enjoys turning something raw into something \"magical.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe artist''s love of puzzles started at a young age. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When I was really young, when I was a kid, before I could really build things out of wood, I used to draw mazes, specifically for my dad. And the goal was to draw him a maze he couldn''t solve.
