off a weekend meeting aimed at starting trade talks that stalled in Seattle two years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eRiot police confronted a few dozen protesters earlier on Friday in front of Mexico's National Auditorium, but no violence was reported.\u003cbr/\u003eAnti-globalisation groups have accused the Mexican government of trying to limit access to the meeting by keeping most details secret, but they have promised peaceful protests.\u003cbr/\u003eWorld Trade Organisation (WTO) Director Michael Moore said these kind of demonstrations show how people are more and more interested in trade issues.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ministers met Mexico´s president Vicente Fox late on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico had appeared as the major obstacle to the entry of China in the organisation, but Mexico´s ambassador to the WTO denied this.\u003cbr/\u003eMexican President Vicente Fox has invited representatives from 17 countries, Hong Kong and the European Union to hold informal talks on everything from agricultural subsidies to the environment a few of the stumbling blocks to a new round of global trade talks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last round of trade talks, which finished in 1994, led to the World Trade Organisation's creation in 1995.\u003cbr/\u003eMinisters tried to launch a new round in 1999 in Seattle, but failed to agree on an agenda amid riots.\u003cbr/\u003eThey want to avoid another embarrassing impasse before official WTO trade talks in November in Qatar and have been holding a series of informal meetings to try to cobble together a tentative agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the WTO's 142 members argue a new round of trade talks will help stimulate sagging economies, but many developing countries say they have yet to see the benefits of the 1994 agreements.\u003cbr/\u003ePoorer nations want greater access to the markets of the industrialised world, and have argued that any new talks should include discussions on antidumping rules, which try to block countries from flooding other markets with cheap goods.\u003cbr/\u003eMany other countries especially the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Switzerland and some developed countries are trying to maintain agricultural subsidies.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that effort is opposed by countries that hardly use agricultural subsidies, including Australia, Canada, Brazil and Vietnam.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States says it also opposes agricultural subsidies, but has had to defend its use of emergency payments to farmers which some say is a hidden
