Fossett immediately after getting out of cockpit \u003cbr/\u003eRecord-setting aviator Steve Fossett flew to Dulles, Virginia on Tuesday, making what he called the final flight of the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer.\u003cbr/\u003eFossett is donating the lightweight experimental aircraft, in which he became the first person to fly solo, non-stop around the world, to the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Centre near Dulles International Airport.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This aeroplane did everything we imagined it might do, and now to be able to fly it right up to the Hazy centre of the Smithsonian museum is great,\" Fossett said.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter first circumnavigating the globe in early 2005, Fossett embarked from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida in February and flew a non-stop, non-refuelled distance record of 25,766 miles (41,457 kilometres), landing in Bournemouth, England.\u003cbr/\u003eA month later, he took off from Kansas and set a closed-course distance record of 25,505.5 miles (41,038 kilometres), returning to Kansas 74 hours and 26 minutes after takeoff.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It meets all the criteria for our collection,\" said General J.R. \"Jack\" Dailey, Director of the National Air and Space Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aircraft, designed by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan out of lightweight carbon fibre, will be displayed in a hanging position amid the general aviation collection in the Udvar-Hazy Centre's Boeing Aviation Hangar. \u003cbr/\u003eThe turbofan engine that made the three record-setting flights possible will be displayed at floor level.\u003cbr/\u003eRutan, who designed the Virgin Atlantic SpaceShipOne, which was the first civilian spacecraft flown above 62 miles (100 kilometres), has six other aircraft at the Smithsonian Institute.\u003cbr/\u003eFossett's gondola from the Bud Light Spirit of Freedom, in which he made the first solo, around-the-world flight in a balloon in 2002, is on display in the National Air and
