To mark the countdown to the parade, a special fund raising event was held on Oxford Street, the scene of next week's revelries.\u003cbr/\u003eBoys, girls and drag queens turned out for the annual SHOP YOURSELF STUPID DAY to raise money for HIV and AIDS charities.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was dancing on the streets - with a built in cooling system to counter the harsh sun - lots of posing and plenty of shopping for one of the biggest days on the Mardi Gras Festival calendar.\u003cbr/\u003eSome elected to go with the leather and bondage look for next week's parade and evening dance party, whilst others opted for wigs to stand out in the crowd. \u003cbr/\u003eOxford Street is lined with many stores specialising in gay and lesbian fashion, novelties, restaurants, clubs and bars, making it the heartland for Sydney's homosexual community. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the hot weather causing their make up to slide, a number of drag queens took to the stage to compete in the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation - or BGF - drag queen pageant. BGF is Australia's largest and longest serving HIV/AIDS charity. \u003cbr/\u003eWhilst some are dolling themselves up to the nines, others are going for a much more personal beauty treatment. Many solariums and waxing salons are fully booked at this time of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eMardi Gras has already been under way for three weeks - with performances on the stage and screen for the gay and lesbian community.  Mardi Gras organisers and volunteers are now putting the finishing touches to next Saturday's grand finale.\u003cbr/\u003eParade co-organiser Jacqui Jones says a large number of parade entrants this year are from overseas.  She says everywhere from the UK to the US to the Middle East will be represented in floats in the parade.\u003cbr/\u003eSeven and a half thousand people will participate in the parade, 650,000 will take to the streets and cheer them on, and many millions more will watch it around the world on TV and on the web.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a Sydney workshop, excitement is building amongst the volunteers as they construct their floats which form the centerpiece of the parade.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery year the parade has a political message - this year 's theme is OUT THERE EVERYWHERE. \u003cbr/\u003eEntrants include an Olympic float to celebrate Sydney's successful hosting of the Games last year and the lead float - which will  feature flamingos and pink tutus - for parents of gays and lesbians.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well making a political statement, Saturday's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras promises to make a creative one as well - renown for its spectacular costumes and floats.\u003cbr/\u003e Sydney Australia 24/02/01 APTN\u003cbr/\u003e1.
