Bradley we are with you.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 21st 2013 US Army Private Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for giving hundreds of thousands of secret military and diplomatic documents to WikiLeaks.\u003cbr/\u003eFlanked by his lawyers, Manning stood to attention in his dress uniform and showed no reaction as military judge Colonel Denise Lind announced the punishment without explanation during a brief hearing.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the spectators, there was a gasp and one woman buried her face in her hands. \u003cbr/\u003eGuards hurried Manning out of the courtroom as about a half-dozen supporters shouted from the back: \"We'll keep fighting for you, Bradley!\" and \"You're our hero!\"\u003cbr/\u003eWith good behaviour and credit for the more than three years he has been held, the 25-year-old could be out in a little more than eight years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former intelligence analyst was found guilty last month of 20 crimes, including six violations of the Espionage Act, as part of the Obama administration's unprecedented crackdown on media leaks. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was acquitted of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy, which carried a potential life in prison without parole.\u003cbr/\u003eManning could have gotten 90 years behind bars. \u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors asked for at least 60 as a warning to other soldiers, while Manning's lawyer suggested he get no more than 25, because some of the documents he leaked will be declassified by then.\u003cbr/\u003eHe will have to serve at least one-third of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was also demoted to private and dishonourably discharged.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a news conference following the sentencing, Manning's lead lawyer, David Coombs, said there needs to be more whistleblowers like Manning.\u003cbr/\u003eCoombs also said Manning would do it again because of his \"strong sense of morality\".\u003cbr/\u003eBut Lisa Windsor, a former lawyer in the Judge Advocate General, the legal arm of the military, said there was \"nothing glorified in what he did, releasing classified information just wantonly the way he did.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\" that could have had a horrendous adverse effect on national security and could have cost service members' lives, and he really didn't consider that,\" she added.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the verdict, Manning supporters left the courtroom and gathered outside the court building at Fort Meade.\u003cbr/\u003eSupporters chanted support and cheered for the man they called \"a hero\".\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors called Manning an anarchist and an attention-seeking traitor, while supporters have hailed him as a whistleblower and likened him to Daniel Ellsberg, the defence analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers
