One has to acknowledge that this meant that we did not achieve the goal that was set which is 3 (m) million by 2005, but I can't imagine that we would have had such a dramatic increase had we not set ourselves to a very ambitious goal and worked extremely hard towards it."
7. The response is very uneven across the world. Sometimes there is more focus on treatment and sometimes more on prevention, but usually the focus is more on treatment ,when treatment is possible, because now we have much more access to treatment. So there is an uneven response and as we all know if we don't stem the tide of new infections we are never going to be able to cover all the people who need treatment because they will keep increasing and we will never reach the target that we set for ourselves."
FILE: Mathare, Nairobi - 30 November 2005
9. In certain regions or sub-regions within sub-Saharan Africa you actually have countries where there is a evidence that epidemics are still growing. This is particularly true for countries like South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. Outside Africa it is also recognised that there are other regions where it is recognised that the epidemic is still expanding. This is the case for Eastern Europe and Central Asia and it is also true for several countries in East Asia."
13. Pan across speakers at news conference
A UN report released on Tuesday suggests that although some progress has been made in fighting the global spread of HIV/AIDS, the epidemic is still expanding in some countries.
New data released on Tuesday shows that India now has the largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS.
With an estimated 5.7 (m) million infections, it has surpassed South Africa's 5.5 (m) million.
But the epidemic still remains at its worst in sub-Saharan Africa, where per capita rates in several countries continue to climb - a third of adults were infected in Swaziland in 2005.
UNAIDS on Tuesday launched a 630-page report that takes stock of where the world currently stands with nearly 40 (m) million people living with HIV/AIDS.
It documents countries' progress and failures, and projects what must happen to keep some regions from experiencing disaster.
Dr. Purnima Mane of UNAIDS, said on Tuesday that although "some progress" had been made in terms of access to treatment, the picture across the world remained "very uneven."
She also warned that action needed to be taken to "stem the tide of new infections" otherwise there would be no chance of treating the increasing numbers of people infected.
The report was released a day ahead of a High Level Meeting on AIDS in New York, a week prior to the 25th anniversary of the first documented AIDS cases on June 5, 1981.
One of the most disturbing findings was how few babies were being protected against infection.
Only nine percent of pregnant women in poor countries are receiving services, such as access to drugs, to help prevent mother-to-child transmission, despite a UNAIDS goal of 80 percent coverage.
Women's vulnerability to the disease continues to increase, with more than 17 (m) million women infected worldwide - nearly half the global total - and more than three-quarters of them living in sub-Saharan Africa, the report found.
Stigma and discrimination also still plague those infected with the virus worldwide, and young people's knowledge about HIV/AIDS remains low with less than 50 percent having adequate information about the disease - a far cry from the 90 percent target UNAIDS set for 2005.
Dr. Peter Ghys from UNAIDS said the situation in sub-Saharan Africa remains dismal, where 24.5 (m) million people were infected and home to nearly 90 percent of the world's children living with the virus.
"In certain regions within sub-Saharan Africa you actually have countries were there is a evidence that epidemics are still growing," said Ghys.
South Africa remains one of the world's most tragic situations with nearly one in three pregnant women testing HIV-positive in public antenatal clinics in 2004.
Nearly 19 percent of adults were infected nationwide last year and the per capita rate is continuing to climb.
But some of the new numbers do offer a small sliver of hope.
Kenya and Zimbabwe, along with some cities in Burkina Faso, reported declines in the overall percentage of adults infected.
The Asia-Pacific region is also a concern with 8.3 (m) million people infected, the second-highest after sub-Saharan Africa.
Eastern Europe and Central Asia have also become a new front where infections have expanded as people have access to more money and have started buying injecting drugs - instead of just shipping them through - from countries like Afghanistan.
Currently, about 1.3 (m) million people in poor countries have access to antiretroviral treatment, but about 80 percent still are not receiving drugs.

<div class='action-container flex
