They took their data from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite - U-A-R-S. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"UARS measurements also confirm that the chlorine chemistry is responsible for the ozone hole. This is what we suspected all along. But the link between chlorofluorcarbons and chlorine in the ozone hole is really made solid by these measurements.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER: Mark Schoeberl-NASA Scientist.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the nineteen eighties, scientists have suspected CFC's and other man-made gasses were responsible for thinning the ozone layer in the stratosphere, or upper atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists say their new data confirm that man-made chemicals are the primary cause for the ozone hole over the South Pole. \u003cbr/\u003eCFC's from industrial chemicals and other carbon-based gasses from automobiles are seeping through the upper atmosphere, NASA says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result, scientists say, are large-scale ozone losses letting in ultraviolet radiation from the sun. NASA experts say they can rule out other causes with their data.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"We believe that this data eliminates the possibilities that there are natural sources of chlorine in the stratosphere. And I think this data confirms that chlorofluorcarbons are the major source of chlorine in the stratosphere and are responsible for ozone loss in the in the stratosphere that we're seeing in all of our requirements.\"\u003cbr/\u003e(Schoeberl)\u003cbr/\u003eSchoeberl says the amount of CFC's have stopped increasing.
