Look at the number of times mission creep occurred in Bosnia, leading to the present situation.  And the number of times various European and American populaces were told, 'don't worry, we're only there for six months and then we're leaving,' well, NATO and other troops who are in Bosnia, they have been there now for six years, they will easily be there for another six years, there is no sign of troops being able to leave Kosovo.  A cynic would say with Macedonia all the signs are there for mission creep.  But that's perhaps an over cynical line.\"\u003cbr/\u003eColchester\u003cbr/\u003e12. Pan across entrance to Colchester Garrison\u003cbr/\u003eNATO troops are preparing for a disarmament mission in Macedonia after after alliance leaders voted in favour of sending an advance deployment of 400 troops to the region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bulk of the troops in the initial group will be made up of British forces.\u003cbr/\u003eA total of around a thousand UK soldiers could now touch down in the troubled Balkan state in the coming weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eThey will form part of a 19-nation force, whose number will ultimately total 35-hundred.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first forces to be sent in are likely to be the 16th Air Assault Brigade, based in the British city of Colchester.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir job will be to verify that the ceasefire between Macedonian forces and ethnic Albanian rebels is holding before the mainstay of the NATO mission is called in.\u003cbr/\u003eDubbed Operation Essential Harvest, their task will last 30 days and also include troops from the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, Hungary and the Czech Republic.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough there have been several reports of small scale fighting inside Macedonia since the ceasefire was agreed between the two sides, British defence expert Francis Tusa said he didn't think the soldiers would be in any danger.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir task is not to act as a combat force, he stressed, but to collect arms from those ethnic Albanian rebels who willingly hand over their weapons.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Tusa, the editor of the Defence Analysis publication, said he was not convinced that NATO would be able to limit their mission to just 30 days.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said there was a distinct possibility that so-called \"mission creep\" could set-in - a phenomenon which has occurred on many previous NATO missions in the Balkans, such as in Kosovo and in Bosnia.\u003cbr/\u003eThat would mean the NATO forces staying on perhaps for years longer than planned, in order to fulfil duties
