terrified Liberians crowded into the compound to escape fighting engulfing the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no word of any injuries to US Embassy staff or other Americans. \u003cbr/\u003eWitnesses said four people were trampled to death in the stampede to get in the US compound gates.\u003cbr/\u003eThe blasts sent the terrified throngs fleeing in the opposite direction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last Americans had evacuated the residential compound in recent weeks and moved across the street, into the more secure embassy compound.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least three explosives hit within the refugee-packed residential compound.\u003cbr/\u003eSurvivors ran past with wounded,  wheeling one bleeding young man out in a wheelbarrow, and using a ragged shirt as a stretcher for another victim.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Embassy and sprawling US residential complex nearby are on a rocky hillside overlooking the Atlantic coast. \u003cbr/\u003eUS authorities earlier in the day admitted tens of thousands of refugees to the US residential compound as rebels,  armed with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, small arms and other weapons, attacked the city.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was unclear whether the explosions were from mortars or rocket launchers. \u003cbr/\u003eSome guards at the complex told US authorities they had seen assailants with rocket launchers outside.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US diplomatic area, always heavily guarded, is known as a place of refuge during the 14 years of war that have subsumed Liberia under warlord-turned-president Charles Taylor.\u003cbr/\u003eLiberian civilians, with no hope of rescue or flight, often shelter there in hopes the diplomatic area will be safe from attack. \u003cbr/\u003eWednesday marked the first time since 1996, during the height of Liberia's 1989-1996 civil war, that authorities had opened the residential compound as a refuge for Monrovia's people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Embassy has remained staffed, after a voluntary evacuation
