Wide as the hikers walk down towards the village of St Catherine.
Tourists to Egypt often miss out seeing the natural beauty of Mount Catherine, targeting more popular destinations like Mount Moses instead.
But the Bedouin of the Jabaleya tribe, whose ancestors have lived in the mountains of Sinai since the sixth century AD, say there's much more on offer than the usual tourist hotspots.
The walled village of St Catherine is a welcome sight in the desert.
Tourists trickle in and out on tour excursions from the Sinai resorts of Sharm el Sheik and Dahab.
The Orthodox monastery here is a UNESCO world heritage site.
But some stay a little longer and with the help of Bedouin guides explore Mount Sinai, Egypt's highest mountain range.
Its peak, Mount Catherine, reaches 2640 metres.
All hikers are required to take a Jabaleya Bedouin guide with them as part of a rotating system (Dour), a tribal law put in place by Sheikh Moussa, one of St Catherine's leading tribesmen.
He explains how it works: "There are approximately 29 families and each one of them takes his turn to work. They're keen to see where Moses is said to have received the ten commandments from God.
The Bedouin say most tourists miss out on other beautiful opportunities in the area. Nasser Diguni, a Jabaleya Bedouin guide says "Tourists come from Sharm El Sheikh or Dahab and they are only aware of Mount Moses and the Monastery of St catherine. It's unexpected that there are little rivers flowing and everything is flowering and so green, like an oasis. It's very beautiful."
The thick shade provided by the trees and the altitude keeps a very cool temperature in the gardens - so cool that some move into the sun for a short nap.
The reality is that most tourists coming to St Catherine come via organised tours where their day is mostly spent in a bus travelling from their hotel to the parking area of the monastery.
Many tourists are also afraid of coming privately to this area because of recent bad publicity concerning tourists being kidnapped.
Sinai's local Bedouin population is largely resentful of the central government in Cairo because of years of discrimination, marginalisation and heavy-handed security sweeps under Egypt's former autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak.
Many live on smuggling of weapons, drugs and human trafficking.
Egypt's northern Sinai region and border areas with Israel and Gaza have plunged into lawlessness and are also believed to be strongholds of Islamic extremists.
Tourists have been targeted in the past by Bedouins in Sinai seeking to pressure police to free detained relatives. They are typically not held long and are released unharmed.
Luckily, these events have not put off some travellers from visiting St Catherine, which is located in the southern provinces of Sinai.
Katharina Von Der Boun and Gil Kunold are a German couple on holiday.
