Various of cuddly toys and dolls on stand\u003cbr/\u003eIt's never too soon to protect your child from becoming obese, according to nutritionists.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the UK Baby Show it seems good food habits can start as soon as your child is ready to eat.\u003cbr/\u003eIsabelle is just five months old, but her parents have good cause to worry about what she eats.\u003cbr/\u003eA government survey of British schoolchildren last year showed that a quarter of children arriving at reception class were already classed as obese.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time they leave to attend secondary school at eleven a third of them will be obese.\u003cbr/\u003eThe figures come from the National Child Measurement Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eNow nutritionists say it's not enough to worry about meals in school, a good diet starts in the womb and carries on into the cradle and class.\u003cbr/\u003eIsabelle's mother Alex Davies is determined to ensure her daughter isn't one of these children.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"I'm quite concerned about it I want her to eat the best things that I can possibly give her I don't want her to eat lots of surgery, fatty foods, I try and give her lots of vegetables.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt the London Baby Show diet is top of the agenda.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Davies is mixing powdered food today she says Isabelle \"will have lots of pureed vegetables that I've done at home, or pureed fruit, lots of carrots, parsnips and potatoes, lots of apple and pear I do, but normally that's at home.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo great is the concern about childhood obesity and its repercussions for the general health of the population that one of the UK's biggest supermarket chains has set up a kitchen here.\u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is to show parents that they can start children eating fruit and vegetables by incorporating them into all types of meals.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is called the 'Little Ones' kitchen and it's serving up dishes based on recipes approved by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF)which provides information to schools and health professionals as well as mums and dads in general.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the menu today is a risotto and muffin made with apple and carrots. \u003cbr/\u003eThe BNF's Emma Williams says babies \"should be eating a variety of foods so basically, as with adults we would say you should be eating a variety of fruits and vegetables because of the different colours of these fruit and vegetables you're ensuring that your child is getting all the different nutrients that are available.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA multitude of studies are being done around the world to investigate child food allergies to products such as dairy, eggs and peanuts.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams says if you, or close family suffer from a food allergy, your child is also more likely to have an allergic reaction to certain foods.\u003cbr/\u003eShe advises that these parents speak to health professionals, or see their family doctors to discuss their baby's diet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Nutrition Foundation is particularly concerned by what it says is a growing number of infants who are becoming deficient in vitamin D.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is a particular problem for countries in northern Europe, Scandanavia and north America where sunlight is limited.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Williams \"young children should be given vitamin D supplements because of the very region we live in (UK), there's a lack of sunlight and we only absorb the sunlight during the summer months from April onwards, so it's important that they get a source of vitamin D from other areas and that can be oily fish, or eggs.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Nutrition Foundation is keen for supermarkets to take a proactive role in encouraging parents to cook food using fresh, raw ingredients.\u003cbr/\u003eClasses like this which demonstrate quick, easy and healthy meals are especially welcomed. \u003cbr/\u003eWilliams says it's vital that healthy eating is a good habit which starts from the cradle.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"it's absolutely essential that they get a taste for these foods early on because it's going to shape their behaviours in later life\".\u003cbr/\u003eIf children continue to have poor diets she says there will be \"implications for the risk of obesity, it could have implications for heart disease, stroke and things like that in much later life.
