French newspaper headline about face transplant\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors in France said they had performed the world's first partial face transplant, forging into a risky medical frontier with their operation on a woman disfigured by a dog bite.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 38-year-old woman, who wants to remain anonymous, had a nose, lips and chin grafted onto her face from a brain-dead donor whose family gave consent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe operation, performed on Sunday, included a surgeon already famous for transplant breakthroughs, Dr. Jean-Michel Dubernard.\u003cbr/\u003eA statement issued Wednesday from the hospital in the northern city of Amiens where the operation took place noted the patient's general condition as excellent and said the transplant looks normal. \u003cbr/\u003eDubernard would not discuss the surgery, but confirmed that it involved the nose, lips and chin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe surgery drew both praise and sobering warnings over its potential risks and ethical and psychological ramifications. \u003cbr/\u003eThe head of the plastic surgery division at the Rothschild hospital in Paris, Dr. Maurice Mimoun, said: \"If it (face transplant) is rejected (by the body), we will be left with a hole. What are we going to tell the patient if it didn't work out? That is really difficult.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIf successful - something that may not be known for months or even years - the procedure offers hope to people horribly disfigured by burns, accidents or other tragedies.\u003cbr/\u003eClinical Psychologist Marie Haddou said the patient may an identity problem and find it difficult accepting the facial features of a dead person.\u003cbr/\u003eHaddou said: \"This woman must first of all accept having a face that's no longer her own. Her family and her friends won't recognise her either and that will be very difficult for her to live through.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists around the world are working to perfect techniques involved in transplanting faces. \u003cbr/\u003eToday's best treatments leave many people with facial disfigurement and scar tissue that doesn't look or move like natural skin.\u003cbr/\u003eA complete face transplant, which involves applying a sheet of skin in one operation, has never been done before.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics say the surgery is too risky for something that is not a matter of life or death, as regular organ transplants are.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main worry for both a full face transplant and a partial effort is organ rejection, causing the skin to slough
