Thank you and enjoy the flight.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe flight, as the unseen stewardess refers to, is just  400 metres (1300 feet), but it's already creating a buzz of excitement.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's been built at a cost of over sixty million pounds ($94 million (USD), about a third of that has been sponsored by the Emirates Air Line after which it has been named, at least for the next ten years.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's been built to provide a short cut for Olympic visitors, but Transport for London, which is responsible for all public travel in the capital, is insisting it'll also be useful as a long term solution for commuters trying to cross the river.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cable cars cross the half mile between Greenwich and the Royal Docks offering vistas including the Olympic Park, the Canary Wharf financial centre and the Thames Barrier, massive structures in the river that keep London from flooding. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the business stakeholders had been given a trip, it was the public's turn to jump on.\u003cbr/\u003eQueues had started to form a tangible sense of excitement.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project is viewed by city officials as step towards stimulating business growth in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone was impressed.\u003cbr/\u003eSome like pedigree British Bulldog Charlie Barrow Cliff were too overwhelmed by that rare thing in the UK called heat and sunshine.\u003cbr/\u003eEmirates Air Line president Tim Clark is pleased with the investment.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"It was a very brave move to have undertaken in the first place, a visionary one and a lot of cities in the world, a lot of civic entities wouldn't have done it, but these people were bold enough, brave enough to say lets do this.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eThis elegant structure looks simple, but the people who constructed it have managed to overcome serious obstacles.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the towers had to be built hundreds of feet from the riverbank, in the midst of strong tidal flows.\u003cbr/\u003eCranes were hauled in to raise the towers and cables over the top of the Docklands Light Railway, Olympic construction sites and a busy dual carriageway.\u003cbr/\u003eMatthew is a director for Mace, the company which has overseen the construction of the entire project.\u003cbr/\u003eThat included dropping enormous concrete blocks into pre-prepared foundations in the river, rolling hundreds of thousands of metres of steel around the helix shaped centre of the towers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe steel construct had to be placed precisely on bolt holes in the concrete base in the river.\u003cbr/\u003eRandall points out the Thames is a busy working thoroughfare and closing it to traffic creates enormous financial and logistical problems.\u003cbr/\u003eSo everything had to be constructed in advance, a lot had to be built on the banks of the river.\u003cbr/\u003eThe engineers had one weekend to do the job, regardless of hard weather conditions, visability and strong tides.\u003cbr/\u003eRandall also points out that the sleek, seamless design of the towers was something the architects insisted upon. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"They're four structural ribbons of 50 millimetre (2 inch) thick steel plate, which wraps around and ends in two ears as we call them and those ears provide the support of the tower heads. Within the tower structure is a helix structure and that provides the inner core, the inner strength, because these towers are built with such fine (precise) tolerances that you can let them move because the towers all need to be in a line to enable the cable car to run across them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLast minute checks are still continuing. \u003cbr/\u003eThese workmen are using machinery imported from China specifically to test and ensure the base is able to withstand impact from passing river traffic.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the largest vessels are able to travel through here. \u003cbr/\u003eRandall says \"We pre-cast the concrete base of the south tower on the base of the riverside so we were doing that work while the piling was being undertaken. We then lifted that in three, or four very large pieces with a very big crane and that got us out of the tidal zone, we were then in a position where we could put the south tower in and that was lifted in eight sections, very large sections, 80 metres (262 feet) from the river bank, using an even bigger crane.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome Londoners view the cable car as a folly which isn't properly integrated into the city's transport system and some believe it should have connected the city to the Olympic sites.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cost of riding on the car varies according to which travel pass you purchase, but locals say it's too expensive for any but city businessmen and women.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Clark says: \"Would it because it is 400 metres (1300 feet), not do the job? I think it will I think you will see in the commuting periods in the rush hour people will use it, when the Excel is in full, fully active with the conference side of things. Don't forget it's one of the largest conference exhibition centre in Europe, one of the biggest in the world, so this will all add to that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe proof of success is in the experience.\u003cbr/\u003eRestaurant manager Bobby Chan queued at 5am to ensure he got the first ticket as a souvenir.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"I was actually the first and it was fascinating, beautiful views, excellent, well designed as well and it's lovely.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLocal resident Jacqueline Jones says it's expensive, but worth paying if you need to cross the river quickly.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most discerning of those passengers trying out the new system is Charlie Barrow Cliff  and his owner Jerry Combrink.\u003cbr/\u003eCombrink says it's been given the British bulldog seal of approval.\u003cbr/\u003eTfL, the operator, says people who don't want to travel with canines like Charlie can get a separate carriage.\u003cbr/\u003eEmirates Air Line in Numbers\u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ The cable car takes around five minutes to cross the river\u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ The length of the link is approx 1.1-kilometre (0.68 miles) and passengers will reach a height of up to 90 metres above the Thames\u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ There will be up to 34 cabins operating at any one time\u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ Each cabin has the capacity to accommodate 10 seated passengers\u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ The Emirates Air Line will be fully accessible. \u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ Cabins are expected to arrive every 30 seconds in the peak, meaning the system will be able to carry up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction - the equivalent of 30 buses\u003cbr/\u003eï¿½ It is estimated that the link will carry up to two million passengers per year\u003cbr/\u003eLondon, UK, June 28, 2012\u003cbr/\u003e1.
