Panning orchestra saluting (sound of people applauding)\u003cbr/\u003eThe lives of disadvantaged children in Venezuela are being transformed by music. \u003cbr/\u003eA revolutionary project set up over thirty years ago has given generations of children the chance to grasp new opportunities.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe students enter with a violin case or tuba slung over their shoulder, sometimes a double bass is dragged towards the class room. \u003cbr/\u003eThese children are unlikely classical musicians, but they have found a new world in music through a unique programme that has changed their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pupils are participants in one of the most-talked-about teaching systems in classical music today, a nationwide network of orchestras that has made Venezuela a powerhouse for producing talented musicians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"El Sistema\", the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela, is becoming a model internationally for getting children excited about classical music.\u003cbr/\u003eThis orchestra of 6-to-12-year-olds spends afternoons rehearsing Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Merle J. Isaac's \"Gypsy\" Overture in their school classrooms.  \u003cbr/\u003eMany students come from humble families who otherwise couldn't afford instruments or formal training. \u003cbr/\u003eA cement plant and chicken farms are the biggest employers in this small town called San Sebastian de Los Reyes, but music is giving the children a new direction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe children don't have to look far for role models. Johnny Cubides, a  40-year-old who leads the music school, started in the System at a 10-year-old student. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is now the director of \"Youth and Children's Orchestra. San Sebastian de los Reyes\"\u003cbr/\u003eCubides says that music give the children hope and direction in their lives. \u003cbr/\u003e\"El Sistema\" was conceived in 1975 by a visionary economist, musician and former congressman, Jose Antonio Abreu, who was driven by a conviction that all children should have access to a quality musical education.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then the project has been financed by successive governments. \u003cbr/\u003eCubides says Abreu encourages people to embrace music. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"El Sistema\" helps children to become better citizens and to take care of their world. \u003cbr/\u003eIt all began more than three decades ago with 11 young musicians under Abreu's tutelage. \u003cbr/\u003eRehearsals were held at first in a classroom, a parking garage and loaned space in other buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eHe then founded orchestra after orchestra across Venezuela.\u003cbr/\u003eThe teaching philosophy is straightforward. \u003cbr/\u003eAll are welcome, children as young as three begin with singing, xylophone playing and other exercises. \u003cbr/\u003eAn instrument is chosen according to each child's inclination and abilities, provided free for the majority who otherwise couldn't afford one.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students learn largely by practice, while theory is introduced along the way. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of their teachers were trained in the same system, forming a bottom-up cycle that keeps regenerating as knowledge is passed along. \u003cbr/\u003eBy age 10, some standout students are already helping to coach their peers.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are some similarities with the Suzuki method, created by the late Shinichi Suzuki, which emphasises getting a child to enjoy music by hearing it in a family atmosphere and playing it as early as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eBut teachers here say their intensive programme has developed its own characteristics and emphasises collective  advancement. \u003cbr/\u003eLove of music and hard work are guiding principles - encapsulated in a slogan engraved on medals for orchestra members: \"Tocar y Luchar,\" or \"Play and Struggle.\"\u003cbr/\u003eToday there are some 150 youth orchestras and 70 children's orchestras in Venezuela.\u003cbr/\u003e\"El Sistema\" involves more than 250,000 pupils, extraordinary for a country of about 27 million people.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of those students Roland says that one he wants to play in an orchestra when he grows up and plans to continue studying music.  \u003cbr/\u003eNot all students are expected to become professional musicians. \u003cbr/\u003eTeachers say many students go on to successful non-musical careers as doctors, engineers and other professionals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe programme's star graduate, is 27-year-old conductor Gustavo Dudamel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe talented conductor, leads the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra and is set to become music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in September 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eDudamel says the project was a like a family for him and he regards an orchestra as a perfect community. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that \"El Sistema\" gives everyone a chance to play a fuller role in the life of the country. \u003cbr/\u003eDudamel says the project changed his life and give him a new direction, transformed by music. \u003cbr/\u003eHe and the orchestra received long, thunderous ovations last year in two sold-out concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall.\u003cbr/\u003eDudamel will lead the Israel Philharmonic on a seven-city tour of America to help celebrate the Jewish state's 60th anniversary with eight concerts during the Nov. 15-24 tour. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the orchestra performs at home, admiring children often fill the front rows.\u003cbr/\u003eInternational recognition of the programme has been widespread. \"El Sistema\" won its latest honour, Spain's Prince of Asturias Arts Prize, in May 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eIts musicians have teamed up to share their methods with orchestras across Latin America. \u003cbr/\u003eProgrammes modelled after \"El Sistema\" have sprung up in places from Scotland to California.\u003cbr/\u003eThe youth orchestra foundation headed by Abreu has been financially supported by government after government in Venezuela, most recently by President Hugo Chavez.
