He is the first American president to have visited Northern Ireland while in office.  The first American president to place the problems of Northern Ireland high on the agenda of American policy.  The first American president to have appointed a special advisor on Northern Ireland and I know his interests will continue.  He's very much concerned about what happens there but it's important to understand the proper role of the United States.  The proper role of the United States and any American, President Clinton myself, or anyone else is not to tell the people of Northern Ireland how to live.  It's to help create the circumstances in which the people of Northern Ireland can decide for themselves how they want to live and that's what makes this result so great. The government's asked me to return and serve as chairman of a committee to supervise the implementation of the agreement but unfortunately I had to decline I've been there for three and a half years, I've neglected my family and my business and I couldn't go back for a couple of years but the United States will continue to play an important role.  President Clinton's interest in this is very personal, very deep, he places a high priority on Northern Ireland and I think he will play a continuing important role.  \u003cbr/\u003eQ.  And on a personal note, can you tell us how this rates as a personal achievement, you've been very humble.\u003cbr/\u003eA.  Well, it's a great feeling. I feel I've done something good and meaningful in the last couple of years and I now have a dream.  I told the delegates at these talks just before I left that I hope to return with my young son to sit in the gallery of the Northern Ireland assembly and to watch them debating the ordinary issues of democracy - education, health care, fisheries, agriculture and have my young son with me and so they won't be talking about death and destruction and war and peace, they'll be talking about how to make people's lives better, that's really what matter in a democratic society.  And when I see that I'll be fulfilled.\u003cbr/\u003eQ.  OK, just on a more pessimistic note.  What is in place, what kind of infrastructure is in place in case violence arises in the next few weeks?\u003cbr/\u003eA.  No society can be absolutely and totally free of violence.  Right here in the United States we saw that with the devastating tragedy in Oregon just a couple days ago and so I think it's not realistic or fair to put Northern Ireland to a standard that no society has ever been able to meet.  Of course there's going to be violence.  The question is whether the overwhelming majority of people reject it which they have now done and whether the overwhelming majority of people make clear that for them the path to the future is the path of democracy and peace not the path of violence and destruction.
