Healthy African elephants...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe first case of tuberculosis in a wild elephant has been found in Kenya.  \u003cbr/\u003eTB is common among elephants, but until now it has only affected animals that have regular human contact such as in zoos or circuses.  \u003cbr/\u003eHealthy African elephants enjoying the wild plains of East Kenya. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now, veterinary scientists in Kenya are concerned that these majestic animals may be at risk from a very human disease - tuberculosis. \u003cbr/\u003eElephants can be at risk of TB from infected humans, during breeding programmes that use both wild and captive animals or from grazing land that elephants share with domestic livestock.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, the Kenya Wildlife Service says it has found the first case of tuberculosis in an elephant in the wild at the Tsavo national park in the east of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eVincent Obanda, a veterinary research scientist for Kenya Wildlife Service says: \"Tuberculosis is an ancient disease, it's an old disease that has been in humans and also in elephants and the cross transmission between elephants and human beings, it has been for a long time, especially where they are in close contact or they are staying together, especially in zoo's or in circuses, so it is not new case. But the case that is new that we are reporting is reporting an animal that is in free range, it is in the wild.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe 12 year old elephant was spotted in the national park looking frail and was quickly quarantined.\u003cbr/\u003eObanda explains: \"This is the elephant that was infected and this animal is within the stockade after being rescued from the wild, it was brought into the stockade for treatment. So the first day it was treated and it looked like it would survive, but after a day, it succumbed, it died and so we did a postmortem and on opening the animal, we found the lungs, both sides of the lungs were covered with white mass, as you can see these are the lungs, they do not look normal, the normal part was a very small portion, this reddish part, this was the normal part, the other areas were all covered with a white mass and those ones are symbolic of the TB kind of infection.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShowing pictures from a report the Kenya Wildlife Service released recently, Obanda says they are not sure where this elephant contracted the disease. It had been rescued from the wild, raised in an elephant orphanage in the eastern part of Kenya then released back to the wild after 7 years.\u003cbr/\u003ePoaching has long been threatening the number of elephants in the wild in Kenya. If wild elephants are now susceptible to TB it will be a double blow for the population of Kenyan elephants. Obanda believes if this is the case it is time for humans to do more to protect the species. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For a long time, people have believed that animals should be left in the wild without intervention, without any veterinary, clinical care or whatever and that is true because, those days or those years, the environment was stable and it was pristine, but as the environment gets degraded, the immune system of the animals and they're interacting with other pathogens from maybe humans or domestic, they are likely to become susceptible and we are likely to face more of pathogens that may threaten our populations.\" \u003cbr/\u003eEfforts to protect elephants from poaching in Kenya have started to pay off.  An aerial census carried out in 2011 showed the elephant population in Tsavo-Mkomazi ecosystem to be 12,572 -  up from 11,696 recorded in 2008.
