It's helped the country become globally renowned for eco-tourism.
Now, one popular rainforest park claims to be fully accessible for people with different abilities.
This green frog, or the anteater bear are just some of the animals living at this nature reserve in Costa Rica.
But Carara National Park is not just catering for those that can see the creatures. It is a specially adapted park for disabled people wanting to experience the park through touch and sound.
Costa Rica's new inclusive policy will enable people to discover different species, and to do it on their own terms.
51-year-old music teacher, Gerardo Mora is blind. And until recently, a walk through the rainforest on his own would have been very difficult.
Mora can now pick up a specially adapted audioguide, and walk over to the information board that has braille information.
The Carara National Park is adapted to the needs of people with different abilities, and features things like an embossed map that points out rest points along the way.
With the help of his guidedog, Mora embarks on the rainforest pathways. He can enjoy the sounds and smells of the rainforest.
He can also feel the clay statues of rainforest creatures, such as the macaw. The different sculptures enable visually impaired people to get a better sense of what the animals look like.
Mora says: "When they added the clay statues, it was good because I know for the first time what a Macaw is like. There is some equality, and I can now identify the same things as people that can see. Later when they began to make audio MP3 maps, then one says, "Okay, perfect!" What they are reading, I am listening to. When they brought out the embossed maps, you can point out the paths. It is important because walking along the path, or somewhere does not mean that one will know how it is exactly because I cannot feel it with my feet, but when you feel it in your hands, you can understand what it's like, and have the independence that anyone wants to have, and no need to have someone saying "this, and that" about how things are, you have it at your fingertips."
The campaign to build "a path for all" was developed within six months in an alliance of the public-private sector.
151,000 Costa Ricans also donated money, and the trail was completed in 2012.
Park director, Roco Echeverri says the success of the route in the park is down to four things: safety, independence, comfort and the natural surroundings.
"I would like to highlight that the park is a mix of all the elements, and all the tactile additions make it special. It is not only because it has specially adapted paths, tactile maps, audio guides, labelling, and sculptures to help people with disabilities to enjoy it in the following manner - independence, comfort, nature, and safety - these are the four parts that actually ensure the path is accessible," she says.
Just one hour from San Jos, the trail cuts through two forests, and presents a unique biodiversity in fauna and flora.
In the park you can see hairy caterpillars dangling by a thread, or anthills with leaf-cutter ants.
Or an El Ceibo tree or perhaps an iguana if you are lucky.
Theatre producer, Eduardo Mosheim is seeing the park from his wheelchair.
He stopped to enjoy the hairy caterpillars: "Well what I liked are the hairy caterpillars, it's just funny because, there are a few caterpillars that were just hanging... I began to take pictures because there were a few worms that were moving along on threads, which was very impressive. But when I got close to the caterpillar, you could see that it had a lot of hairs, and colours, and was very luxurious."
Costa Rica is considered one of the 20 countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. More than 500,000 species that are found in this area represent about 4% of the total species estimated worldwide.
Visits to the Carara National Park have increased by 70 percent since the open access scheme began.
Giving more people the chance to experience the beauty in the world around them.
AP Television
Carara National Park, Costa Rica - June 2014
1.
