One click lowers kitchen cabinets to his height. Another pumps up the surround sound stereo in the living room.
Now, the only battle he fights is on a customised PlayStation in his bedroom.
From the safety of his new abode, he remembers back to the day when his life changed:
"I turned around, took my first step forward, and next thing I know, being flung into the air, I tried to open up my eyes, I no longer had my glasses on, tried opening them up, there was nothing but dirt and soot and sand, everything in my eyes. Next thing I know, I see the helicopter medic, and he was like 'Alright, you're going to take a nap for a little bit.' And I was like 'alright, I'll see you guys in a little bit!' Wake up two and a half months later in a hospital room with a white blanket over me."
It was only a matter of minutes before he realised where he was: Walter Reed Medical Centre in Washington, DC.
He was now limbless and having to face up to a whole new reality.
Unfortunately, John's story is becoming an all-too common one. He is the third American to have all four limbs amputated because of the conflict. And the list is growing.
In 2011, the bleak statistic inspired the partnership of two major charities - the Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation - to form a joint project - Building for America's Bravest. Their mission was to fund and build smart homes for these types of severely wounded veterans.
Most of their fundraising comes from charity concerts and public appeals. Other organisations frequently help to pitch in too, such as the Semper Fi Fund and Hope for the Warriors.
So far, they've built six new houses and are building an additional 13 homes.
Each new abode costs close to half a million US dollars to construct and is completely customised for the soldiers' preferences and needs.
For John, a simple keypad on the front door was important, leaving out the hassle of juggling small, cumbersome keys.
Two closed circuit televisions were also mounted in the living room and bedroom, to help him feel more secure.
All of the closets are walk-in, with shelves low enough to be accessed by wheelchair.
The master toilet is a complex bidet, operated by a large-buttoned remote control keypad.
The shower is also controlled by a touch-screen keypad, allowing temperature and pressure to be altered before climbing in.
All the lights around the house are linked to touchpads on the walls. They can also be turned on and off with the iPad.
In the kitchen, even the stove knobs were made taking into account John's condition - they're large enough to be turned on without fingers.
Lisa Krutyholowa, John's mom, says it's all these little things that make recovering much easier for the whole family.
"It's helped because I can go out and go shopping if I need to and I know if I am out doing something for - whether it's running errands or shopping or whatever - that he can get to things and take care of himself a little bit so I won't have to worry about him so much."
Frank Siller and Judy Otter are at the forefront of the Building for America's Bravest project. They hope to continue raising money for other veterans found in the same situation.
"For us, the program is 'Building for America's Bravest' because obviously, these are the bravest of all Americans. And we don't want to just build them a home, we want to help rebuild their lives," says Frank Siller.
Down the road, the American Heritage Homes architecture firm is also working hard to make disabled veteran life easier.
Architect Kristin Pruitt helped draw John's floor plans over a year ago. She remembers the tough obstacles faced in development.
"The greatest challenge was envisioning yourself in his personal situation. So, you had to think about how you would go through your day with no arms and no legs," says Pruitt.
Kristin said a lot of her inspiration came from large, open-plan models she's worked on before. Space was key in designing for someone bound by wheelchair.
Back at home, John feels anything but bound. His new peace of mind has inspired him to open up a restaurant in town with friends one day.
And now with the ability to practice in his new smart kitchen, that dream could very easily become reality.
But for now, his dogs are getting some serious playtime.

<div class='action-container flex
