Wide of a street of La Paz, with the Illimani mountain in background\u003cbr/\u003eOld people's homes are often places where the elderly spend their final years, with little to look forward to.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in La Paz, Bolivia, small groups of the elderly have gathered together to reduce their costs , and get better organized at keeping in work and being vital members of society.\u003cbr/\u003eThis week it's the turn of Dona Placida Padilla to cook for the others. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Awichas (meaning elders, in traditional Aymara language, but also used as a reference name for old people's group), the rule is that everyone participates in daily activities by turn.\u003cbr/\u003eThey do everything themselves, and the ones who are too old, do what they can to help.\u003cbr/\u003eApart from visits from a psychologist and counsellor, a music teacher and a social worker or supervisor, supported by the NGO HelpAge International, and the mayor's office, the lives of these people are run by themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eDona Placida explains the food she plans to cook for the next meals she will have to prepare herself, and she looks forward to it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Awichas were founded 24 years ago by a small group of elders who decided to put everything in common to lower costs, survive better in the modern city jungle, and not finish their lives like scores of other old people sadly living in the streets of La Paz.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of the Awichas' house courtyards (there are 4 of them in La Paz), people prepare alpaca wool to knit.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Awichas produce typical Andean clothes that are exported and sold through other partnerships such as an elderly group in Sweden. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also prepare natural medicines to sell on the local market, and prepare food they sell during \"fiestas\" where they are invited to perform dances and play music. \u003cbr/\u003eDona Ramona Cahuana, the only survivor of the first such group, is 79 years old.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explains that when they have a problem among themselves, only the involved persons resolve it, and no one else.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother rule, for example, is the right of admission. \u003cbr/\u003eAny new person interested in joining the Awichas has a 3 month trial period. \u003cbr/\u003eThen there is a vote and the person is definitely accepted, but the applicant has to behave and follow the rules, otherwise they may be expelled. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Mercedes Zerda, the psychologist who's followed the Awichas since their creation 24 years ago, this is a key point.\u003cbr/\u003eThe discipline prevents the elderly from becoming senile or feeling useless and depressed.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is also a strong social aspect that keeps people \"alive\". \u003cbr/\u003eThey live in a group and have to interact with the others, having to prove themselves everyday.\u003cbr/\u003eAs for example, this group of elderly people meets each day in the local courtyard to knit, sew and chew traditional coca leaves.\u003cbr/\u003eThese elders have either no family, or relatives don't care about them, either because they just can't economically or they've just forgotten about them. \u003cbr/\u003eMany have had very difficult lives.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Javier Chipana, a music teacher, taking part in singing and dancing helps these people to forget the tough times.\u003cbr/\u003eMarisol Surculento is a social worker and a focal point for the different Awichas houses. \u003cbr/\u003eShe helps them manage their finances and organise themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eShe explains that the awichas are proud people who have a lot of dignity. \u003cbr/\u003eMercedes Zerda, the psychologist who follows the Awichas , says it is interesting to see how poor, uneducated people, who have been discriminated against during their entire life, can end their lives in a dignified and happy way. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Catherine Dusseau, in charge of programs at \"HelpAge International\" . She says the Awichas represent for them the perfect image of old people they want to promote.\u003cbr/\u003ePer month, each elderly person \"costs\" USD 11 (that includes food and accommodation).\u003cbr/\u003eEveryone receives a rent from the state of USD 28 and pays 4 USD to the community. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 6 USD left are supported by a Bolivian NGO (fundacion San Luis).\u003cbr/\u003eThe elders use the USD 24 left from their rent for their other personal costs, especially health.\u003cbr/\u003eEven compared to Bolivian standards, these costs are pretty
