They come in and they put their finger on a fingerprint mechanism and it just automatically clocks them in. They don't have to use passwords any more," says Chris Smith, Assistant Manager of KFC Restaurant.
While before with regular passwords it only took a few numbers to gain access to a money-filled till, Smith says this a much more effective system: "It keeps others from trying to get into their registers or log in or clock themselves in or out by using someone else's number."
As the finger print scanners require the workers at this KFC restaurant to actually be at the till when it is opened, Smith says it's a much better system for keeping their takings safe: "You would often times hear the manager just holler out their password, instead of actually now we have to come up and you have to physically be here in order to do that. You know, that way it keeps employees from learning our passwords. Obviously, they can't take our fingerprints from us. So, yeah, it's much better," says Smith.
But from a take-away restaurant to here at Purdue University, researchers are foreseeing biometric technology entering numerous areas of human life.
Scientists here at the International Center for Biometrics Research are working on technology that could see the numerous passwords that computer users must remember being replaced with simple steps such as iris and fingerprint scans.
The basement lab of Purdue University is where such emerging biometric technologies are tested for weaknesses before being released to industries.
Director of the International Center for Biometric Research, Stephen Elliot, says he sees the technology entering numerous areas of human life: "I think we'll see it in a number of different areas. I think we'll see it in more in travel, for example, for border control, ease of use access. But also on the more consumer side. You see the phones coming out, the iPhone, the HTC got announced just recently, with biometric fingerprint sensors built on there. The thing is, we want to protect our privacy and also be able to make sure we don't have fraudulent transactions, we'll see the use of biometrics in that area as well."
With smart phones such as this Apple iPhone 5 beginning to embrace fingerprint scanning technology, Smith believes biometrics is revolutionizing the way people gain access to personal information.
"I think the best thing about it is it will eliminate the use of passwords, for example. I can just log onto my phone, I can just swipe my fingerprint on there, on the sensor. It will continue to revolutionize identity management."
Smith says the problem with current methods of protecting our information is that security systems are too easy to be compromised: "The problem with passwords is not the passwords themselves, it's the fact that we're lazy when we create them. Which makes it easy for us then to get fooled. We give a lot of information out about ourselves on Facebook and other social media sites. We may reveal certain questions about ourselves like who we are or where we're going or what we're doing and who we're dating and stuff like that that enables us to maybe other people to gain access to those questions that those websites ask when they want to verify your identity."
As Biometrics technology relies completely on the person being at the device to scan their fingers or iris, Smith says it means people will no longer be able to cheat systems into thinking they're at places they're not: "First of all, you can't be me. So I can tell you my password and you could log into a computer for me and gain access through the stuff. So, that happens all the time, people go ahead and say ''Can you log me in?' or 'I'll log you in' for something. Or if you're running late and you're at work and they have a clock-in system. They're going to have to do it themselves, I can't have their hand."
While Smith admits that biometric technology isn't completely invulnerable, he says that to the average person it would not make sense attempting to break it: "Biometrics is just another tool to enable us to protect our content on the phones or at the border or anything else like that. There are always ways that people will find, but for a regular person, the opportunity cost of sitting down and trying to get round these devices is really not practical."
With Smith and his team experimenting on a range of new biometrics technology, he believes that it is gradually moving away from science fiction stereotypes to real-life gadgets: "I'd hope you'd be able to completely eliminate passwords today. I think what we're going to see is a shift in consumer perception of biometrics from the kind of Hollywood-esque or government applications into putting it into consumer's hands.
