Mid view of Veterinarian Michelle Crocheck checking birds
More than three hundred health policy and industry leaders from around the globe gather in Seattle to discuss global health care issues on June 20.
The threat of bird flu, and the US response to a possible outbreak, is expected to feature on the agenda.
Although the United States is not under great threat of an avian flu pandemic, the US agriculture department is still working towards a preparation plan in case the situation should change.
The hub of the bird flu emergency response is located at research labs in the country's midwestern state of Iowa.
Here birds are constantly tested to determine whether the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus has arrived in the United States.
The U-S Agriculture Department's elaborate plans for dealing with an outbreak of avian influenza on US soil will be organised here in a nondescript setting in the Iowa countryside.
Strict security is the only thing giving away the possibly dramatic role that this building could play in a potential international drama.
The security and the protective clothing the scientists wear may seem like something straight from a made-for-TV disaster movie, but the risk of humans who are dealing with diseased birds catching the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu is very real.
The labs, normally off-limits to anyone but the scientists who work there, were opened to journalists for a walk through of the nation's only internationally recognised bird flu testing programme.
Researchers test for bird flu, mad cow disease and many other animal diseases on the 640-acre campus near Iowa State University.
Four unsuspecting chickens strutting around in their cage could be the crucial link in determining whether the high pathogen bird flu arrives in the United States.
The four fowl, and hundreds others like them, are key players in a complex testing process at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories that will determine whether the H5N1 bird flu virus has arrived in the United States.
Larry Granger, who oversees emergency management for the Agriculture Department, says that lab diagnosis is central the country's avian influenza response plan.
Known as the H5N1 strain of bird influenza, the virus spread from Asia, where it's blamed for the slaughter of 200 million birds, to Africa and Europe.
The virus has killed at least 124 people.
In order to monitor the disease and react quickly if it reaches the US, the government has begun a massive testing programme.
The first phase started in Alaska, where thousands of migratory birds will be captured and swabbed.
The wild birds are considered natural reservoirs for bird flu and can harbour hundred of different flu viruses.
Samples will be shipped to a network of laboratories across the country for screening.
If a sample contains evidence of the H5 virus, it then gets shipped to Ames, where tests are run over several days to determine if the infected bird carried the H5N1 strain.
First, virus from the sample is injected in birds' eggs, which are tested five days later to determine whether it is one of 144 strains of bird flu, or whether it is another disease such as Exotic Newcastle, which is harmless to humans but deadly to poultry.
If it contains bird flu, the sample is tested to determine whether it is H5N1 or another of the avian influenzas.
Only those testing positive for H5N1 go to the lab with the caged chickens.
Eight of these birds, specially bred and disease-free, are injected with virus from the suspect sample.
Perhaps within hours, certainly in two days, the birds will begin moving more slowly, perhaps hunching in the corner of the cage and no longer eating and drinking.
Their wattles might turn from bright orange to blue.
The test results will be announced publicly, likely by officials in Washington.
However Granger says that although the virus may be present in the wild bird population it does not mean that there is necessarily a risk to human health or commercial poultry.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says despite no positive findings in the U-S, the federal government was preparing for the worse.
And in fact the head of the Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the US National Institutes of Health, Dr Anthony Fauci, says sometimes the preparedness has adverse affects as people assume the worse case scenario will take place.
So far, the virus has mostly affected birds.
Those people who have died from the virus lived mostly in Asia had close contact with infected birds.
However, scientists cautioned that the virus could mutate into a form that spreads easily among people and could spark an epidemic.
Keyword-Birds

<button aria-expanded='false'
