Conjoined twins, Kendra and Maliyah Herrin, in their swing\u003cbr/\u003eFor four-and-a-half years, they've been one... twin little girls, conjoined at their midsection.\u003cbr/\u003eBut on Tuesday, doctors successfully completed 26 hours of separation and reconstruction surgery. Now, they are sleeping in separate beds for the first time in their young lives.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors said they finished surgery on Kendra Herrin about an hour after finishing their work on her sister, Maliyah. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth girls were moved to the paediatric intensive care unit, where their individual beds were placed side by side.\u003cbr/\u003eThe girls had been born fused at the midsection, sharing a liver, a kidney, a pelvis, one set of legs and part of their intestines.\u003cbr/\u003eSurgeons at Primary Children's Medical Center gave each girl one leg, split their liver and intestines and reconstructed their bladders and their pelvic rings.\u003cbr/\u003eKendra kept their one functioning kidney, while Maliyah was prepped for kidney dialysis and a transplant in three to six months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hospital's chief of paediatric surgery, Dr Rebecka Meyers, said Herrins' separation is believed to be the first performed on conjoined twins with a shared kidney.\u003cbr/\u003eMeyers said the surgery, while complicated, had not presented any major surprises for the team of six surgeons, two anaesthesiologists, two urologists, one radiologist and more than 25 nurses and medical technicians.\u003cbr/\u003eBut she added, the days ahead will still be tough, and the twins will now face medical challenges, not to mention separate lives.\u003cbr/\u003eMeyers said Maliyah did not require immediate placement on dialysis, but she expects that may happen within a few days. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the girl is strong enough - likely in a few months - she'll get a kidney from her mother, Erin Herrin.\u003cbr/\u003eThe twins are expected to remain in intensive care for about a week and recover in the hospital for at least a month before doctors can consider sending them home.\u003cbr/\u003eConjoined twins occur about once in every 50,000 to 100,000 births. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly about 20 per cent survive to become viable candidates for separation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn most instances, conjoined twins undergo separation surgery between ages six to 12 months, but the girls' shared kidney forced a
