But now I cover myself with sun block which I didn't do when I was young.  That's the bad thing that you can't change, but at least you can be better in the future.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDr Thomas Berger advises that the machine enables you to detect potential problems before it is too late.  \u003cbr/\u003eSkin cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancer and treating it early is essential. \u003cbr/\u003eBerger says: \"And most of that skin damage is invisible.  You cannot see it.  The moment you see a sun spot or you see a freckle or a skin cancer then the sun damage is already at an advanced stage.   If you'd be interested in seeing your sun damage at a certain point in time and your risk of developing certain sun problems like skin cancer for example you could do this skin analysing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Berger half the patients he sees are putting themselves at risk of skin cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the risks are so high that he is seeing people aged 35 to 40 with basal-cell carcinoma cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The sun in the UAE is very strong, and therefore I see a lot of skin damage and a lot of skin cancers in younger patients.  In Germany one would expect the average patient who develops basal-cell carcinoma cancers to be 60 or 70 years old and here I see patients of 35 to 40 years of age,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Berger warns that children and young adults are particularly vulnerable because most sun damage occurs under the age of eighteen.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"It's really important to protect the children and young adults because most of the sun damage happens before you turn 18.  So most of the sun damage that you see in an adult with these machines for example has been caused by sun exposure in early years even in childhood.\"\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike Helen Viken, Robert Ball dislikes being in the sun and covers up as much as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a child growing up in Australia, he says, he did get sun burnt and now tries to avoid it.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter undergoing skin analysis he admits he is surprised by the number of sun spots, picked up by the brown image.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was a bit of a surprise initially when I saw the spots.  I don't have that many spots on my face but you saw the different images and it was a bit of a surprise.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile too much of something can be a bad thing, too little can also be harmful.  Dr Berger reveals that nearly all Emirati women are deficient in vitamin D because they are so covered up from the sun.\u003cbr/\u003eVitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium and for bone growth.  Too little results in rickets in children and fragile misshapen bones in adults.  \u003cbr/\u003eA deficiency has also been linked to cancer and weight gain.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Berger says: \"You get rickets in childhood or you get osteomalacia or osteoporosis as an adult and that's a big problem in this country because people simply don't have enough sun exposure to maintain the vitamin D homeostasis, to boost the vitamin D production.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo the answer is moderation:  a little bit of sun exposure and then plenty of sun cream, hats and umbrellas.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003eDubai - 21st November, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
