American Edward Lu and Russian Yuri Malenchenko spent more than six hours working outside the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eNatural Sound  \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials of the US space agency NASA said Monday's space walk by two members of the Space Shuttle Atlantis crew was flawless. \u003cbr/\u003eAmerican Edward Lu and Russian Yuri Malenchenko spent more than six hours working outside the new international space station.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA says the space walk is an important step in this latest shuttle mission to prepare the space station for its first livein crew. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA officials say American astronaut Edward Lu and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko finished their spacewalk about 15 minutes ahead of schedule.\u003cbr/\u003eLasting more than six hours, the venture took both crew members some 110 feet from Atlantis' cargo bay. \u003cbr/\u003eMonday morning's outing for Lu and Malenchenko began with a lift 40 feet up the space station, via the shuttle robot arm. \u003cbr/\u003eThen they were on their own, ascending hand over hand like rock climbers.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the Earth 370 kilometres below, Lu and Malenchenko made the gruelling climb up the side of the international space station.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hike up the structure was expected to be slow going and filled with obstacles  jutting antennas and docking targets.\u003cbr/\u003eLu and Malenchenko were tethered to the structure as they worked, with minijetpacks on their suits for added safety.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two men needed to scale the Russian module Zvezda in order to erect a 6foot boom for a compass. \u003cbr/\u003eBy measuring Earth's magnetic field, the compass, called a magnetometer, enables the space station to know which way it is pointed.\u003cbr/\u003eRussia installed the magnetometer too close to Zvezda's metal hull. \u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, its measurements are inaccurate. \u003cbr/\u003eThe spacewalkers also had to string nine power, data and television cables between Zvezda and the Russian module Zarya. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cables, between 16 feet and 27 feet long, were launched on reels.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA officials confirmed the 110foot distance of the mission, making it the longest tethered space walk in NASA history.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Actually they did get to about 110 feet, and that was when they were installing the magnetometer.
