Exterior, medical school\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators lifted scraps of warped metal and crouched among charred trees Wednesday, searching for victims' remains and trying to piece together clues.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials are currently unable to explain what could have caused both engines of the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 plane to fail, causing Venezuela's deadliest airline disaster on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is also expected to take some time to identify the scattered remains of the 160 people killed in the crash.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the victims are thought to be holidaymakers who were heading home to the French Caribbean island of Martinique after a weeklong trip to Panama.\u003cbr/\u003eFrench specialists have been sent to Venezuela to join the investigation and help identify victims' remains.\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuelan investigators were focusing on the possibility of contaminated fuel or some other fuel problem that led both engines to fail simultaneously, according to one emergency official in the western state of Zulia.\u003cbr/\u003ePanamanian authorities, however, said they found no evidence of tainted fuel and that the plane had plenty of fuel for the three-hour trip.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pilot radioed the nearest airport before the crash, saying both engines had failed and requesting permission for an emergency landing. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said the plane apparently fell into a steep descent minutes later.\u003cbr/\u003eWorkers spread out collecting victims' remains at the crash site on Wednesday, wearing surgical masks and high boots as they stepped through mud and brush, and used chain saws to cut toppled trees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plane's tail jutted from the ground in the tree-dotted pasture littered with scraps of metal. \u003cbr/\u003eWorkers carried away the remains of seven people on stretchers.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly all remains had been removed by Wednesday afternoon, said Col. Antonio Rivero, the emergency agency chief.\u003cbr/\u003eMany victims were torn apart by the impact. \u003cbr/\u003eThe remains were flown by helicopter and carried by four-wheel-drives to a medical school morgue in nearby Maracaibo.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The majority of the bodies have arrived at this point,\" said state health official Yalila Perozo outside the University of Zulia Medical School, where forensic scientists were embalming the victims' bodies.\u003cbr/\u003eFamily members of the plane's Colombian crew gathered outside the medical school in Maracaibo. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a very tough blow that nobody wishes for.
