leaf and create catchy songs about the country's forty-year war. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile producers say the music is gaining new fans across Colombia and abroad, it remains shunned by the country's polite society.\u003cbr/\u003eMajor radio stations refuse to play the songs, considering them a coarse glamorisation of all that has kept Colombia synonymous with cocaine and violence. \u003cbr/\u003eAt a concert in Bogota on Friday, the audience joined in as the band sang about Carlos Castano's rise to head the far-right paramilitaries, responsible for exporting hundreds of tons of cocaine and allegedly for dozens of massacres too. \u003cbr/\u003eMusic producers say the songs fill a cultural void in Colombia, where pop songs rarely stray from conventional love themes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe songs echo the dreams of many in the country's impoverished underclass, the producer of the album series titled \"Forbidden Rhythms,\" said.\u003cbr/\u003eSinger Rey Fonseca says he likes the fact that many different groups of people respond to the music. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The drug traffickers like our music, the paramilitary like our music and the rebels love it, of course,\" Fonseca said. \u003cbr/\u003eOver time, the music has evolved beyond drug trafficking to deal with other problems such as rampant political corruption and the droves of Colombians forced from their homes by violence.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's even a song about the kidnapping of presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, who just marked her fourth year in captivity by the leftist rebels.\u003cbr/\u003eUnsurprisingly, given the subject matter, the atmosphere at concerts tends to be highly-charged.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At this type of event, people's blood boils and they get into the music because we are singing about the problems affecting our country,\" Fonseca said.\u003cbr/\u003eMost retailers in Colombia do not carry the CDs in stock. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Mexico, another country plagued by drug violence, musicians have adapted the country's traditional ballads into folk songs that chronicle the exploits of drug gangs. \u003cbr/\u003ePioneered in the 1970s and 1980s by singers
