She's got a fascination with sweetcorn at the moment and obviously that's quite a sweet vegetable so she would happily pick it out of her dinner and eat it rather than the broccoli.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation is focussed on infant and child diet because it says: \"Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOverweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age.\u003cbr/\u003eMary Fewtrell is a professor of paediatric nutrition at the Institute of Child Health, University College London.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"The period of foetal life and infancy up to the age of two years is a really critical period for the brain. There's a huge amount of growth is going on in the brain and we have very good evidence actually that adverse nutrition, generally lacking in nutrition, or even lacking in specific nutrients particularly iron, can have sometimes permanent effects of brain function.\"\u003cbr/\u003eScientists say infancy and the first year is a period of the greatest growth for a baby and it is a time when the brain is most plastic, meaning that environment and diet can have a greater impact.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Fewtrell says: \"Whilst we do have evidence that early life factors, infant growth, how you feed a baby are important and have an influence and you can perhaps do something about it, you shouldn't overplay that. I mean it's been estimated for example, that about 20 per cent of your risk of being obese later on might be related to things like your infant diet and the early growth pattern. So we shouldn't be pretending that this is the only factor. Of course your diet later in life is going to affect whether you become overweight, or obese, but your diet early on might affect whether you're predisposed to become obese, or overweight in any given situation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHow a baby is weaned is not set in stone.\u003cbr/\u003ePaediatricians say a problem is that not all parents are aware that some formula milks have a higher protein content so the amount of solids they have should be adjusted.\u003cbr/\u003eFewtrell says: \"Nutrients that a baby needs to get from the solid foods actually really are dependent on the type of milk that they're getting alongside it. So the recommendations, for example from the World Health Organisation assume that a baby is continuing to breast feed in the second six months alongside solid foods, but actually if a baby is receiving formula it will be getting a much higher protein intake and then there is some concern as to whether babies in developed countries are actually having too much protein during this period and whether that actually might be an additional risk factor for later obesity. There hasn't been a huge amount of research on that at the moment but it's an area of interest.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the WHO \"prevalence has increased at an alarming rate.
