Woman removing flowers from burial niche\u003cbr/\u003eIf property prices are plummeting, prices of tombs and sepulchral artifacts are rocketing, especially in the historic Roman cemetery of Verano. \u003cbr/\u003eAt auction 34 tombs in 3 main cemeteries in Italy's capital Rome are being sold off at prices that range from 24-thousand euro (33,500 USD) to 312-thousand euro (435,700 USD).\u003cbr/\u003eA chapel in Rome's Verano cemetery or a one bedroom apartment in the nearby San Lorenzo area?\u003cbr/\u003eUnless you are well above the average Roman in richness, it's one or the other, if a rough 300-thousand euro (419-thousand USD) is your budget. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it's not an easy choice, considering it takes about a lifetime of savings to buy one or the other in Rome.\u003cbr/\u003eChapels, graveyards, sepulchers and shrines are up for sale at prices that range from a rough 24-thousand euro (33,500 USD) for an 8-corpse grave to a maximum of 312-thousand euro (435,700 USD) for a chapel hosting 20 dead. \u003cbr/\u003eA total of 34 tombs are up for sale: 8 in Rome's central Verano cemetery, 24 in Flaminio cemetery in the outskirts of the city and 2 in Maccarese, a small village on Rome's coastal shores.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Director of Rome's Capitoline Cemeteries Vittorio Benedetto Borghini says the decision to sell the heavenly homes was taken when it became clear that the previous owners had either all died out or relatives of the dead had emigrated, leaving the Roman municipal Agency AMA to deal with the maintenance of the artifacts. \u003cbr/\u003eMany tombs were disowned by relatives of the occupiers, who could no longer afford to pay for such a lavish afterlife. \u003cbr/\u003eAMA, the capital's main environmental services agency, was formally entrusted with the care of all Rome cemeteries in 2007, although it has been managing them since 1998. \u003cbr/\u003eDetails of the auction, which ends 24 July, and the tombs can be found on the AMA website. \u003cbr/\u003eLike any other property search website, they include a detailed catalogue with pictures, location, size, storage capacity and prices, which are intended without tax and for the duration of the 75 year lease, renewable at the end of the term.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe tombs are also available to view on Google Maps.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery at Verano is extremely popular among Romans. It's the place of rest of many famous Italian film directors like Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica. \u003cbr/\u003eOther internationally lesser known celebrities like singer songwriter Rino Gaetano are also buried at Verano, where young fans still continue to challenge the scorching heat to lay flowers on his grave, as the cemetery's guardian Fausto says.\u003cbr/\u003eFausto, who started out as a gravedigger and has worked at the cemetery for 38 years, is doubtful of the possibilities of winning one of the auctioned tombs, considering that bidders are not aware of the going price. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bid is strictly open to residents of Rome. This does not exclude foreigners or anyone who can prove to be a relative of a current resident of Rome, as long as the tomb is co-purchased or bought by the Roman resident. \u003cbr/\u003eSo international bidders are welcome if they can prove this relationship and, of course, if they are keen on securing a place in the eternal cemetery of Rome.  \u003cbr/\u003eMarble artisan Luigi Giammei, who runs a business near the Verano cemetery, says he is not afraid of competition because the artifacts are historic buildings of enormous value. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, he will not compete
