Pan from performers with disabilities waving to audience, to audience standing and applauding\u003cbr/\u003eTwo German citizens are attempting to bring hope and help to people with disabilities in North Korea. \u003cbr/\u003eRobert Grund, who is deaf, has spent a long time trying to engage with people in the impoverished country. \u003cbr/\u003eIt took him three trips to Pyongyang over a period of two years before he finally got started, meeting deaf North Koreans for the first time in 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2008, he set up a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Berlin dedicated to his work with deaf and blind people in North Korea. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is called \"Together Hamhung,\" combining the ideal of working with people with disabilities and integrating them into society, and the name of a North Korean city, Hamhung.\u003cbr/\u003eNow Grund lives in Pyongyang, where he goes to have his hair cut at a barber shop with a difference.\u003cbr/\u003eThe North Korean man cutting his hair is also deaf.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is also a tailor, and a repair shop where people with disabilities are employed. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are run by a North Korean organisation, The Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled (KFPD), but most of the funding and equipment came from South Korea and other countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe KFPD is trying to expand its work, expanding awareness and recognition of people with disabilities in North Korean society.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This year's goal for the disabled project is to increase awareness in the whole of society about disabled people as well as increasing the capabilities of disabled people, in order to conduct social activities on an equal position as normal people,\" said Ro Kyong Su from the KFPD.\u003cbr/\u003eBarbara Unterbeck grew up in the former East Germany and has lived in Pyongyang for much of the past three decades.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is now working with Robert Grund and the KFPD, and is acutely aware of the difficulty in finding funding for humanitarian projects in North Korea at this time of increased tension.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've been here for several years, we are doing a good job here. They need the support, they are born deaf, or acquired deafness, they are born blind, or acquired blindness during life, and this is very natural,\" said Unterbeck.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Disabled children Disabilities, on 3 December, with a performance by people with disabilities. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a country with a human rights record that is routinely condemned by the United Nations, and where for a long time people with disabilities have been marginalised, it was seen as a small step forwards.\u003cbr/\u003eRobert Grund and Barbara Unterbeck are now pushing ahead with a project to set up a new
