Close-up bottle of Botox\u003cbr/\u003eFrom the streets of Hollywood to the corridors of power in Washington DC - the not-so-young and beautiful are reclaiming their youthful looks in ever increasing numbers in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe use of botox, a botulinum toxin which reduces facial lines by targeting the underlying muscles, has doubled in the United States in the past 18 months and is gaining popularity elsewhere.\u003cbr/\u003eIn less than a minute, people have the worry lines and frown marks on their face smoothed away.\u003cbr/\u003eA plastic surgeon for 18 years, Dr Michael Olding has been using Botox for four years.  During a cosmetic treatment, he injects Botox into the facial muscles that cause wrinkling. \u003cbr/\u003eThe drug blocks a substance called acetylcholine that transmits signals from the brain to the muscle, paralyzing the muscle. \u003cbr/\u003eThe effects normally last about three months, which keeps most patients returning on a regular basis for treatments that average about $400 US.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the fourth time patient Nancy Kressy has used Botox - and she says she couldn't be happier.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd thanks to patients like her, injections of the drug have become the most popular cosmetic medical procedure in the US since 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eLife-long friends Vivian and Adrianne - both remarkably good looking at 69 - are now part of the Hollywood craze which has spread to the East Coast. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, Adrianne was so happy with the result of her injections, she insisted that her best friend join the trend.\u003cbr/\u003eAnti-ageing, like fertility treatment, is a booming branch of medicine. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while the Oscar Awards are for the famous and beautiful, the pressure on the performers to look their best was translated into a spike in demand for botox injections. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd injections can be used for a variety of purposes: injecting them in armpits to stop the tell tale sweat marks, to putting it in the face to create a serene expression.\u003cbr/\u003eNot since the early days of Viagra has a lifestyle drug garnered so much attention as Botox.\u003cbr/\u003eBotox already has regulatory approval to treat certain spasmic disorders. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's the drug's wrinkle-busting properties that have created a national buzz for its maker Allergan  although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve Botox for cosmetic use.\u003cbr/\u003ePaul Nassif, a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills, expects a slight increase in business if the FDA approves the process. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said he has already performed a few thousand Botox procedures.\u003cbr/\u003eAllergan submitted clinical trials of cosmetic Botox last year to the FDA, which is now in the final stages of its review process.
