Wide of graves in Colon cemetery\u003cbr/\u003eRobert Lee Vesco, the American fugitive financier who spent a lifetime on the run only to spend most of his latter years in a Cuban prison, died quietly and was buried there almost six months ago, an official document showed.\u003cbr/\u003eA burial record at the Cuban capital's Colon Cemetery shows that a Robert Lee Vesco, with the same birth date as the infamous con man - December 4, 1935 - died on November 23 from lung cancer and was buried the next day in a private plot. \u003cbr/\u003eThe document included the number of the deceased's Cuban identity card, which start with the holder's date of birth, in this case: 351204.\u003cbr/\u003eWriter Arthur Herzog, who had earlier interviewed Vesco in Cuba for a biography, expressed scepticism on Monday, saying that Vesco had long employed elaborate schemes to escape justice.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't know for sure, but I'm not certain he's dead,\" Herzog said from his home in New York. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said he recently spoke with a contact in Havana who indicated he had talked with Vesco in recent weeks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He was a master of disguises,\" Herzog said, saying Vesco was so crafty a DNA test would be necessary to know for certain. \"It's just a hunch, but he may still be alive.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut the date of birth on the cemetery document points to the man who evaded American justice through a quarter-century odyssey through the Caribbean and Central America. He would have been 72 when he died.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. officials in Cuba said on Monday they were unaware of Vesco's death.\u003cbr/\u003eVesco was 60 and living on the island when he was charged with economic crimes against the communist-run government in the production and marketing of a drug known as TX, which he claimed could cure cancer, AIDS and other ailments. He ended up serving most of his 13-year sentence, though it is unclear exactly when he was released.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he died, Vesco was still wanted in the United States on charges of looting millions of dollars from a Swiss-based mutual giant.\u003cbr/\u003eVesco fled the United States in 1972, when President Richard Nixon was in office. \u003cbr/\u003eHe had also been indicted for allegedly trying to use a 200,000 US dollar contribution to Nixon's 1972 campaign in exchange for help in heading off an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Two Nixon cabinet members were later tried and acquitted.\u003cbr/\u003eVesco renounced his American citizenship and travelled around the Caribbean and Central America in a yacht and a series of private planes - including a custom Boeing 707 equipped with a sauna.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the decades, Vesco was linked to Latin American presidents, Soviet spies, Colombian drug lords, smugglers of high-technology equipment, even the CIA. He was accused of more crimes, all of which he denied.\u003cbr/\u003eHe settled in Costa Rica, but was kicked out after a change in the presidency in 1978.\u003cbr/\u003eVesco later moved to the Bahamas, but left in 1981 aboard his 1.3 million US dollar yacht just before Bahamian authorities issued an arrest and deportation order for allegedly trying to bribe the administration of U.S. President Jimmy to let Libya buy C-130 military planes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe plot allegedly called for a 220,000 US dollar kickback to the president's brother Billy.\u003cbr/\u003eVesco surfaced on the small Caribbean isle of Antigua in 1982 with a plan to buy half of Barbuda, Antigua's small sister island, and establish a principality called the Sovereign Order of New Aragon.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the autumn of that year he was living in Nicaragua. U.S. drug officials later said he collaborated with the Sandinista government to bring cocaine into the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the end of 1982, he came to Cuba, where he lived off the island of Cayo Largo aboard his yacht with his then-wife and their children. The couple eventually separated and Vesco later formed a relationship with a Cuban woman he referred to as his wife.\u003cbr/\u003eVesco remained safe from U.S. justice in Cuba, which refused repeated American requests to extradite him.\u003cbr/\u003eCuban authorities initially granted Vesco a visa, saying he needed medical treatment. But it began distancing itself from him in the early 1990s after a U.S. federal indictment accused Vesco of working with Carlos Ledher, then reputed head of the Medellin cocaine cartel, and allegedly persuading Cuba to let drug-smuggling planes fly over the island.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, he cultivated friendly relationships with numerous Cuban officials, many of whom testified at his 1996 trial that they felt betrayed when they learned that Vesco tried to develop and market the drug TX behind their backs.\u003cbr/\u003eCreating TX with the help of Cuban government labs, Vesco had emphasised that the product could be used not only to treat the Cuban people but to help their ailing economy, officials testified at the time.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
