Medical staff with patients\u003cbr/\u003eOn October 27th U.N. peacekeepers used helicopter gunships against rebels in eastern Congo, trying to halt a rebel advance as government troops hastily retreated and civilians attacked U.N. headquarters demanding protection. In what appeared to be a major retreat, hundreds of government soldiers pulled back from the battlefront north of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, fleeing in tanks, jeeps, trucks and on foot. \u003cbr/\u003eTens of thousands of civilians abandoned their homes ahead of the rebel advance. \u003cbr/\u003eRebel leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda has threatened to take Goma in defiance of calls from the U.N. Security Council for him to respect a U.N.-brokered cease-fire signed in January.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents opposed to rebels, including Hutus and those who lived in refugee camps after fleeing earlier conflicts, feel particularly threatened. \u003cbr/\u003eOn November 1st British Foreign Minister David Miliband and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner went to DRC after the outbreak of fighting, downplayed the possibility of an EU peacekeeping force.\u003cbr/\u003eKouchner said his government was committed to humanitarian assistance, but not necessarily sending in troops.\u003cbr/\u003eKouchner and Miliband held talks with DRC President Joseph Kabila in the capital Kinshasa, before flying to Goma, where they met with the country's top UN envoy and the head of the DRC national police.\u003cbr/\u003eThe international envoys aim to get Kabila and Rwandan President Paul Kagame - who they were to meet later in the day - to sit down together and sort out the issues at the root of the conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eOn November 6th The U.N. called for an immediate cease-fire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and urged armed groups involved in the fighting to support efforts to find a political solution.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever Laurent Nkunda, the renegade general fighting the government in the east rejected the possibility of a ceasefire.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an interview with AP Television from his base in Tebero Nkunda he said that DR Congo's national army was serving with \"genociders\", referring to Hutus who helped carry out the 1994 slaughter of a half-million Tutsis in Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eNkunda has said he has expanded his mission from protecting the region's minority Tutsis from Hutu militias to \"liberating\" DR Congo from an allegedly corrupt government that he accuses of supporting the militias.\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of militia groups operate in the remote terraced valleys and hills of eastern Congo, a lawless region that the government and a 17,000-strong peacekeeping mission have struggled to bring under control for years.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile thousands of displaced people who fled to the Ntamugenga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) received aid from an international Catholic aid group based in Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eA quarter of a million people have been displaced in eastern DRC since August (2008), when the latest round of fighting between the rebels and the government began.\u003cbr/\u003eIn November outbreaks of cholera amongst internally displaced people in the Democratic Republic of Congo were increasing daily, according to medics at an IDP camp north of Goma.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kibati, a camp for the displaced north of Goma, aid workers from Los Angeles-based International Medical Corps gave water and high-energy biscuits to thousands of hungry children lined up in the hot sun.\u003cbr/\u003eLeon Mugelanya, a doctor at the camp, said they were treating an increasing number of cholera sufferers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe International Committee of the Red Cross was giving out 54,000 litres of drinking water a day to people in Kibati and planned to hand out food to 60,000 in the camp. \u003cbr/\u003eThe World Food Program says it will start distributing a 10-day food ration to over 135,000 people in six camps around
