Its just not the killing and the maiming that goes on in Latin  America. Besides the killing and the maiming and the disappearances and the fear and  the terror, there's the undermining of democratic initiative. This is maybe the larger  picture, the larger reason why the School of the Americas is so insidious. It must be  closed down, because of the killing and the maiming, this stifles the democratic  initiative of some people\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Ed Kinane, School of America's Watch\u003cbr/\u003eLast year, a bill that would have cut off funding for the school was narrowly defeated in  Congress. Politicians promise it will be introduced again next year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut commanders at the school argue that exercises like these prove the school is  needed more than ever in Latin America. \u003cbr/\u003eThey point out that its U-S sponsored training makes a difference in their war against  drugs. \u003cbr/\u003eIn some exercises, students are taught how to apprehend drug kingpins holed up in  remote villages, and the proper procedures for making arrests. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for many protestors and members of SOA Watch, this has become not only a  military, but also moral issue.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently, twenty members of SOA Watch are serving prison time for the charge of  trespassing onto the grounds of Fort Benning, Georgia, where the school is housed.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother six members of the group will begin serving sentences this summer for spray  painting \"School of Assassins\" over the Fort  Benning welcome sign.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I do not believe in oppressing people.
