But this gesture also has its roots in a precise history. Documents show that in 1504, when David was in place in the Piazza Signoria, he had a crown of 28 gold leaves, although they don't tell us where the crown was. There are some historians who say that it was on his head and others that say that is was possibly a crown that covered his private parts or 'pudenda' as they used to call it.\" \u003cbr/\u003e13. Various of statue\u003cbr/\u003eAfter months of meticulous dabbing away at decades of dust and grime, a contested cleaning of Michelangelo's \"David\" is more than halfway done, with experts insisting the restoration has improved the marble masterpiece's appearance.\u003cbr/\u003eFranca Falletti, director of the Galleria Dell'Academia where \"David\" draws 1.2 (M) million visitors a year, told a news conference on Monday that work on the awe-inspiring statue would be finished by late May, four months shy of the 500th anniversary of the sculpture's unveiling. \u003cbr/\u003eRight now, Michelangelo's celebration of naked male beauty looks like a youth who emerged from the tub without scrubbing all over. Grimy gray streaks still coat parts of the statue, with the inner right thigh and much of his upper right arm still to be tackled. \u003cbr/\u003eBut with roughly two-thirds of the dull patina removed, the statue depicting the heroic youth who did battle with Goliath is already bathed in a new light.\u003cbr/\u003eSome critics, like Columbia University professor James Beck, alleged last year that the restoration methods were potentially risky. Beck led an unsuccessful petition drive to persuade Italian authorities to set up an international panel to study the statue's health. \u003cbr/\u003eThe restoration got off to an aborted start when an internationally respected restorer, Agnese Parronchi, quit last year rather than follow orders to use a cleaning method she feared could harm the sculpture. \u003cbr/\u003eA veteran of Renaissance art restoration and Parronchi's successor, Cinzia Parnigoni, expressed almost reverence toward \"David\" when interviewed atop a two-story high scaffolding by Associated Press Television News:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I felt ill the first time I found myself up on the scaffolding\" face to face with the masterpiece, she said. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in the six months since, while applying a kind of \"mud pack\" of cellulose pulp and clay on \"David's\" marble flesh to soak away dirt, \"I made friends with this statue,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the cleaning involved distilled water, although mineral spirits were used to remove yellowish spots of centuries'old beeswax. Parnigoni used plaster to fill considerable pitting on the marble's surface that was serving as dirt traps.\u003cbr/\u003eShe also wielded a scalpel-like instrument to chip away at what looks like age spots - blotches of sulfate deposits that were first blamed by the experts on pollution but latter attributed to restorations centuries ago.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday, the statue was crowned with a wreath of mimosa flowers for the event which coincided with International Women's Day.  Falletti said that the crown was originally used in jest due to the fact that predominately women had worked on the restoration.
