special Easter cakes. \u003cbr/\u003eVladimir is one of the famous Golden Ring towns surrounding Moscow.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a sleepy town of three hundred thousand people with many beautiful old churches, a legacy of its merchant past. \u003cbr/\u003eDozens of the churches are crowned with the trademark Russian golden cupola. \u003cbr/\u003eThe effect when they shine in the sunlight is designed to be similar to the long candles that Christians light inside the churches.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople have been flocking into churches in the provincial town of Vladimir for special church services this week.\u003cbr/\u003eJust like Nina and her husband Nikolay, many have already been to the market to buy eggs and all the ingredients needed for Sunday''s celebration.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in their flat they are joined by their young grandson, Andriy, who helps his grandmother bake the Easter cakes and dye the eggs red using boiled onion peel. \u003cbr/\u003eGrandmother Nina explains that eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ and to represent happiness.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the period of Lent before Easter, Orthodox Christians are not supposed to drink alcohol or eat rich foods. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough they are not supposed to break the fast until Sunday, Nikolay and Nina don''t follow the tradition to the letter. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Easter cakes are prepared with rich, fatty foods such as raisins, butter and eggs to eat on Easter Sunday when the fast is over and Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tradition lives on in the bigger cities, but it''s older people who seem to follow it.\u003cbr/\u003eIgor says that his mother still bakes Easter cakes but he says for him Easter is a celebration of the soul.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Gallery overlooking St Basil''s Cathedral on Red Square in Moscow, a different kind of Easter eggs are on display. \u003cbr/\u003eThese are eggs made by eighty-year old Theo Faberge, the only living grandson of Carl Faberge who made eggs for the Tsar. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally the Tsar would then give the eggs to favoured ministers, friends and royalty on Easter Sunday. \u003cbr/\u003eThis came to an abrupt end with the Communist rulers coming to power.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, almost ninety years later, Faberge eggs have returned to Moscow, although they are no longer made for the Tsar on Easter. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, these elaborate Easter eggs are being bought by rich Russians and foreigners. \u003cbr/\u003eOne egg to celebrate the three hundredth anniversary of the city of St. Petersburg comes with a price tag of US$43,000. \u003cbr/\u003eFaberge eggs are famed for containing small surprises.\u003cbr/\u003eGallery director Lesya Tkach shows one egg made of glass with wild flowers painted on the outside. \u003cbr/\u003eShe explains that there is a clockwork mechanism which plays Tchaikovsky''s Waltz of the Flowers, while inside the egg three butterflies rotate around. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly seven hundred and fifty of this type of egg have been made and they cost eight-thousand US dollars each.
