Wide shot farmers on vehicle leaving their field \u003cbr/\u003ePaddy farmers in northern Iran are worried that their livelihoods will crumble in the New Year because of cheap foreign rice imports.\u003cbr/\u003eOne problem is the lack of modern farming equipment to make Iranian farmers more competitive.\u003cbr/\u003eRice is hugely popular in Iran  -often served at least once a day. \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s long been cultivated near the Caspian Sea coast.\u003cbr/\u003eBut these farmers remain stuck in a bygone era - having to use either hand tools such as sickles, or out-of-date agricultural machinery that performs poorly.\u003cbr/\u003eMazandaran and Gilan provinces are fairly narrow lands situated between the Caspian Sea and Alborz mountains. They''re covered with thick forests. \u003cbr/\u003eThe green flat lands of these two provinces are largely under rice cultivation. However, many farmers are diversifying, turning to growing fruits such as oranges.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are three varieties of rice: short grain, medium grain and long grain rice. \u003cbr/\u003eShort grain, which is the traditional type of rice planted in northern Iran , has a soft sticky texture and glossy appearance when cooked. It''s  much like the Japanese style rice.\u003cbr/\u003eMedium grain rice is a tender and moist variety of rice and has a light brownish colour. It also has a high tendency to stick together.\u003cbr/\u003eLong grain rice generally produces a firmer, free flowing texture compared to medium and short grain varieties. \u003cbr/\u003e(Standard white long grain rice is obtained from the milling of paddy varieties and has a slight off-white colour and bland taste and aroma.).\u003cbr/\u003eThe long and medium grain rice have been modified by agricultural engineers. It yields a larger crop with shorter stems that can be easily-harvested by modern agricultural machinery.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, short grain rice has a better taste and these farmers tend to cultivate this type of rice.\u003cbr/\u003eRice seedlings are planted by hand in muddy fields late April and early May. The harvest takes place in September. \u003cbr/\u003eThe short grain rice that has a longer stem and tends to slant downward when exposed to wind that makes it difficult for combine harvesters to function properly. Most of the rice is wasted.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother problem faced by these farmers is that they own small pieces of land and their little income from rice growing will not let them buy modern machinery.\u003cbr/\u003eOne rice farmer, Zabihollah Jafari, says his entire family must work together to make a living. \u003cbr/\u003eHe grows short grain rice that produces less crop than other types, has a small farmland and says his land is too muddy for modern expensive agricultural machinery.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the first half of 2009, 881-thousand tons of rice was said to have been imported in to Iran  - up about 39 percent compared to the previous year.\u003cbr/\u003eJamshid Nabizadeh, another rice farmer, complains saying he and his fellow farmers grow rice but the government buys it from them at a cut down price.\u003cbr/\u003eJamshid says when he is told that he should buy foreign rice, it is like the government is chanting \"death to farmers\".\u003cbr/\u003eMir Tabaar is an agricultural expert.
