among volcanic rocks on the peak of the 15,000 foot-high (2.8 miles) Sierra Negra, one of the tallest mountains in North America.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 165-feet (50 metre) antenna will be ready to begin test data collecting in May.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is hoped it will be fully operational by the end of 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eConstructing the monster telescope 15,000 feet (4,580 meters) above sea level has been a challenging task for the Mexican and U.S. builders.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of the altitude, all workers are regularly tested to see if they have enough oxygen in their blood.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are rushed down the mountain if their level is found to be dropping too fast.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team has had to haul a whopping 13,000 tons of concrete up the dirt road that winds round the extinct volcano.\u003cbr/\u003eMexican President Vicente Fox and the country's scientific community have championed the telescope, the largest of its kind in the world, saying it shows how a developing
