Bush within an hour of the polls closing. \u003cbr/\u003eSarkozy, a US-friendly conservative and an immigrant's son, had been strongly criticised by his political rivals for portraying himself as close to President Bush.\u003cbr/\u003eHis highly-publicised White House visit late last year was seen as a bid to win the support of the US administration. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he also criticised Washington's stance over global warming. In a victory speech on  Sunday, Sarkozy urged the United States to take the lead on climate change and said the issue would be a priority for France. \u003cbr/\u003eThe reform-minded president-elect has said that placing France back on the international arena is one of his top priorities.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was a critic of his predecessor's handling of the standoff with the US over the Iraq war, which was seen as a factor leading to France's isolation.\u003cbr/\u003eSarkozy defeated Socialist Segolene Royal by 53 percent to 47 percent with about 85 percent voter turnout on
