On the outskirts of the slums of Pakistan's biggest city, protesters burn tyres and throw stones...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003ePakistan's largest city is facing a chronic water shortage. \u003cbr/\u003eThe lack of clean water has sparked a number of ongoing protests in Karachi. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the outskirts of the slums of Pakistan's biggest city, protesters burn tyres and throw stones with a humble demand: They want water at least once a week.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Karachi, people go days without getting water from city trucks. Sometimes they're forced to use groundwater contaminated with salt. \u003cbr/\u003eA recent drought has only made the problem worse. And as the city of roughly 18 million people rapidly grows, the water shortages are only expected to get worse.\u003cbr/\u003eProtester, Yasmeen Islam says: \"Six months have passed, we have not received even a drop of water. What should we do now? Buy water or food for the family. We have small children and young girls, where to take them? Why we are not provided water and punished?\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"In our area there has been no water supply for a long time. We are crying for water, but no one is listening. What is the use of a government? Children are running from place to place to get water. They (the government) should be ashamed. See, women are on the streets,\" says another protester, Fareeda Baji.\u003cbr/\u003eKarachi gets most of its water from the Indus River - about 550 million gallons per day - and another 100 million gallons from the Hub Dam which is supplied by water from the neighbouring Baluchistan province. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in recent years, drought has hurt the city's supply.\u003cbr/\u003eMisbah Fareed is a senior official with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board that runs the city's water supplies. He says they can only meet about half the city's needs - 1.2 billion gallons a day.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With a 650 million gallon supply of water per day, it is impossible to meet Karachi's water requirements. That is why there is no locality in Karachi where daily water is supplied. And the water supplied does not meet the requirement of the population.  There are localities where water is supplied after one day, there are localities where the water is supplied after two, three days. There are localities where water is supplied after three or four days and that too for just two, three hours.\" \u003cbr/\u003eKarachi's water distribution network has exacerbated the problem by forcing much of the city to get its water through tankers instead of directly from pipes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Karachi Water and Sewerage Board operates 12 water hydrants around the city where tankers fill up and then distribute. Even people in the richest areas of the city get their water from tankers that usually come a few times a week to fill up underground cisterns.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With my experience, I can say that next year a good number of factories will close down due to primarily non availability of water. As you are aware that the city is providing 72 per cent revenue to the country and 98 per cent to the province (Sindh). Despite this the federal government is not doing anything to take up a vital water supply project for the city,\" says Fareed. \u003cbr/\u003eFareed claims some criminals have illegally tapped into the city's water pipes and set up their own distribution points where they siphon off water and sell it.\u003cbr/\u003eOther areas of Pakistan pump massive amounts of groundwater. But in the coastal city of Karachi, the underground water is too salty to drink. Many people have pumps, but use the water for showering or washing clothes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe water shortage is exacerbated by Karachi's growing population. Pakistani military operations and American drone strikes in the northern tribal regions, as well as flooding and earthquakes, have pushed people toward a city long seen as the economic heart of Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city is trying to increase the amount of water it gets from the Indus River by building another canal - dubbed the K4 project. But even if they were to get political approval from the capital to take more water from the river, it would take a minimum of four years to build.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Minister for Local Government in Sindh province, Sharjeel Memon says: \"In Karachi, the requirement is 1000 million gallons per day. At present our capacity is 650 million gallons per day.
