overwhelmingly backed by lawmakers on Thursday, capping a lightning-fast approval process that has provoked deep skepticism among shipping experts and concern among environmentalists.\u003cbr/\u003eThe National Assembly, dominated by President Daniel Ortega's leftist Sandinista Front, voted to grant a 50-year concession to study, then possibly build and operate, a canal linking Nicaragua's Caribbean and Pacific coasts.\u003cbr/\u003eA China-based consortium says it will finance the project and turn over control of the infrastructure to Nicaragua in exchange for a majority of the earnings, which it would share with the Nicaraguan government.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This canal is an opportunity to lower the costs of import, the import of industrial products, of supplies and work tools,\" said Carlos Emilio Lopez, a lawmaker with the Sandinista National Liberation Front, President Ortega's party. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's an opportunity to grow economically, to economic viability.\u003cbr/\u003eIt simply grants the Hong Kong-based company HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co. exclusive rights to study the plan and build the canal if it proves feasible in exchange for Nicaragua receiving a minority share of any eventual profits.\u003cbr/\u003eActivists protested outside of congress on Thursday against the approval of the project.\u003cbr/\u003eMany carried posters and banners calling Ortega a traitor for pushing for the construction of the canal.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the company has said almost nothing about the canal's route, it would certainly cross Lake Nicaragua, the country's primary source of fresh water. \u003cbr/\u003eIf one of the world's largest infrastructure projects ever is actually built, the
