Wide of a royal Bengal tiger swimming, reaching the bank then running into the forest
The Sunderbans, a tangle of islands at the mouth of the Ganges River in east India, are home to perhaps the world's largest population of wild tigers - as well as millions of the poorest people in India and Bangladesh.
Despite decades of attempts to keep the tigers at bay, they still kill about two dozen people every year.
Now, experts fear environmental changes and shrinking land could lead to more tiger-human conflicts, with disastrous results for both.
It's a clash of humans versus tigers.
Here, forest guards tranquilise and then rescue a pregnant tigress from a date palm tree after she strayed into Deulbari village near the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve .
The tigress climbed the tree last year to escape a group of villagers chasing her. It took 14 hours to tranquilise and catch her.
The tigress suffered minor injuries from stones and burning sticks the frightened villagers threw at her.
Guards nursed her wounds and then took her by boat and released her deep inside the mangrove reserve.
The 3,700-square-mile mangrove forest in the Sundarbans is the world's largest.
The region is one of the few remaining natural tiger habitats in India.
There are believed to be close to 250 tigers on the Indian side of the Sundarbans, and another 250 on the Bangladesh side.
But the predator's long shadow looms large over village life.
Families scrape by as rice farmers, fishermen and honey collectors.
And nearly everyone has a story about a friend or a relative who was attacked by a tiger.
Each year 60 - 70 people fall prey to tigers according to the District Forest Office.
Jamila Mondal is a tiger widow, a local term used to describe women whose husbands have fallen victims to tiger attacks.
Five months ago, Jamila's fisherman husband Noor Mohammad was attacked and then dragged away by a tiger.
His mauled body was recovered from the river two days later.
Another fisherman Shankar Naiya saw a tiger kill his younger brother when they went fishing in the river.
Despite the traumatic memory, he is forced to continue with his job to earn a living and feed his family.
"We will die if we don't go fishing ...and will die if we go," Naiya says.
Many people believe their best defence is the blessing of Goddess Durga - whose idol rides a tiger - and Bon Bibi, the forest goddess, who controls the tigers that roam her kingdom.
But divine protection is not enough to prevent the man-eaters from straying into villages in search of food.
To prevent the recurrence of such incidents, forest officials have constructed cages for trapping the tigers straying into forest areas close to human habitation.
Analysts say both humans and tigers are suffering from effects of global warming.
Once more commonly spotted in the south, where no humans live, tigers have been increasingly seen in northern woods, closer to the inhabited islands.
At the same time, rising sea levels, erosion and increasingly brackish waters have ruined once-dependable crops, forcing farmers to venture into the tigers' domain in search of fish, crabs and honey to sell.
"There has been a prey deficit for the tigers in Sunderbans in the Northern areas. And that is particularly prompting the tigers for a....more frequent number of straying inside the villages," says Pranabesh Sanyal, a tiger specialist and member of National Coastal Zone Management Authority. "And inside the villages, human habitation has increased a lot and their cattle population has increased, so lot of cattle is available there which is also a food for tiger. And tiger is becoming more and more habituated with this easy prey," he says.
Sunderbans is an established tiger protection zone.
To ward off tigers from creeping into populated villages, officials have built a nylon fence around the tiger reserve, an ambitious solution that needs constant upkeep.
Patrolling and monitoring of the big cats' movements within the region has been stepped up.
Atanu Raha, West Bengal state's chief conservator of forests, says raising awareness among villagers is crucial to keep them as well as the tigers safe.
For Fatik Haldar, the advice has come too late.
He still carries the scars of his close encounter with death when he went looking for crabs in the river in June last year.
A tiger knocked him down and tore into his arm as it tried to pull him towards the forest.
Haldar fought for his life and finally the tiger walked away leaving him half-dead.
He survived the predator's attack, but his disability - and fear - have forced him to give up fishing.
As hard as life is, the villagers can't leave the Sundarbans, because they have nowhere else to go.
Many are descended from families that came here generations ago as landless migrants from Bangladesh or rural east India.
The Sundarbans may be where the tiger also makes its last stand.
The Indian government now wants to recruit retired soldiers to patrol tiger sanctuaries in the hopes of saving the last of the cats after an official report confirmed a drastic drop in wild tiger numbers.
There are only 1,500 left in India's reserves and jungles - down from about 3,600 six
