But for some people this is the most difficult time of the year.Holiday Blues is becoming an increasing problem - when men...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eNow that the gifts are unwrapped and Christmas is over, it's the time of year that many  of us unwind. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for some people this is the most difficult time of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eHoliday Blues is becoming an increasing problem - when men and women suffer from  stress, anxiety and high expectations which result in depression.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile others suffer from SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, depression and  sluggishness due to fewer hours of sunlight.\u003cbr/\u003eFor weeks everyone has been consumed by the holiday season.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's been the busiest time of the year, with the streets, shopping centres, and  department stores crowded with people searching for the right gifts.\u003cbr/\u003eChristmas is a time of joy and celebration, and a time for giving.\u003cbr/\u003eFor some the gift of giving becomes a stressful mission, especially as the holiday  draws nearer.\u003cbr/\u003eAs usual, toy stores were crowded everywhere, with many searching for  this year's  most wanted toy. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople went to great lengths and spent a lot more than they bargained for to make sure  the toy their child wanted was under the tree.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that people get swept up, get caught up in this, and it becomes an obsession\".\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Steven Peterson, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry,  Washington Hospital \u003cbr/\u003eBut as the Christmas rush subsides, there are other concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors throughout the world say the most common illness at this time of year is the  Holiday Blues.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Washington Hospital Centre in Washington DC Dr. Steven Peterson says an  increasing number of people are suffering from this acute form of depression.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it's a very good idea to keep in mind perspective, to scale back one's  expectations. Also to recognise that it's normal to feel sad at this time of year, as we  have more intense joy, and a greater feeling of love and excitement, we're also going to  have more sadness\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Dr. Steven Peterson, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry,  Washington Hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eThis woman is a victim of Holiday Blues.\u003cbr/\u003eSecretary Anita Witter's 18-year old son was shot dead on the streets of Washington  DC last year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Christmas season is a time to reflect on family and happy times, but for Anita, to  do so, only causes emotional pain, having lost three members of her family within five  months.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I miss him a lot, I think about him constantly, all during the day an umm...it's just  rough. In addition to losing my son, that was December 28th, I lost my sister April 18,  and I lost my brother May 19th.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Anita Witter, Holiday Blues' Sufferer\u003cbr/\u003eNothing can bring back her son, sister or brother, but group counselling and therapy  can help her get through the depression she is experiencing this holiday.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors recommend victims of Holiday Blues spend time with friends and family, avoid  drinking and volunteer time to help others.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Christmas season brings out the best in most of us, but the aftermath of the  holiday can bring out the worst.\u003cbr/\u003eDepression is a serious concern this time of year, and another form of acute depression  that strikes around this time is Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD.\u003cbr/\u003eSAD is when people suffer from lack of sunlight.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the days grow shorter during the winter months, researchers have found that  exposure to increased artificial light can help.\u003cbr/\u003eThis woman has been suffering from SAD for more than a decade but didn't even know  it.\u003cbr/\u003eShe now exposes herself to a 'light box' for several hours every day, which lets out light  equivalent to early morning dawn.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says this improves her mood and her energy level.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I didn't think I was depressed but I noticed that I wanted to sleep a lot more, I wasn't  interested in going anywhere, I wanted to vegetate, and hibernate and eat, and just not  do too much\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nancy Butler, Sufferer of Seasonal Affective Disorder\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to doctors it is normal to feel a bit sad at this time of year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut experts warn that if depression begins to take over, people should consult their  physician.\u003cbr/\u003eThe best advice Dr Peterson can give is to avoid stressful situations and think about  setting realistic and achievable goals for the New Year.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington, USA, December, 1996.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
