Apple is easy to analyze because it has one colour one shape, but when it comes to enchilada there's a mixture there, that's what I'm having difficulty with because of the randomness of that food not only the colour and mixture but also the ingredients. Various of children eating lunch\u003cbr/\u003eA calorie counting camera is being used to help children at a number of schools in the US beat obesity.\u003cbr/\u003ePupils take a snap shot of their lunches, and the leftovers, in order to calculate just how many calories they've eaten.\u003cbr/\u003eA school canteen with a high-tech twist.\u003cbr/\u003eThese pupils at an elementary school in San Antonio, Texas are trialling a new camera that photographs food and calculates each student's calorie intake.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sophisticated device even records precisely how many food has been eaten.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two million dollar (USD) research project is being unveiled at five elementary schools in San Antonio.\u003cbr/\u003eThe contents of lunch trays are snapped before and after and a computer works out calorie consumption.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project, funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, is the first of its kind in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cameras, about the size of pocket flashlights, point only toward the trays and don't photograph the students. We're collecting the picture before what's eaten and a picture after they ate and then we're passing it into the algorithm to get all the nutrient levels of it,\" says Dr Roger Echon.\u003cbr/\u003eEach lunch tray gets a bar code sticker to identify the student. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the children load up their plates, whether it's with cole slaw, green beans, chips or fruit, a camera above the cashier takes a picture of each tray.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen lunch is over and the plates are returned to the kitchen, another camera takes a snapshot of what's left. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Echon's program then analyzes the before and after photos to calculate calories consumed and the values of 128 other nutrients. The clever camera identifies foods by measuring size, shape, colour and density.\u003cbr/\u003eParents will receive the data for their children, and researchers hope eating habits at home will change once the parents see exactly what their children are choosing in school. \u003cbr/\u003eThe data will also be used to study what foods children are likely to choose and how much they're eating.\u003cbr/\u003eAs children go through the lunch queue - trays laden with cheesy enchiladas, rice, fat-free chocolate milk and an apple - two cameras, one pointed directly down and another about tray-level, photograph their food before they sit down to eat.\u003cbr/\u003eWorld Health Organisation statistics show obesity is a major problem in the US, in 2007 it was the ninth most obese nation in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eOver two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese, according to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2007-2008.\u003cbr/\u003eObesity contributes to type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, strokes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, osteoarthiritis and some forms of cancer. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Echon is still developing the program and expects to spend the first year of the four-year grant fine-tuning his equipment. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the 2012-13 school year, the Social Health \u0026amp; Research Center plans to have a prototype camera up and running.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Echon has already made some changes to the project. For example, he discovered mashed potatoes served at some schools was lumpier than those served at others. Dr Echon says he started from scratch because there was no other food-recognition software to build upon. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers selected poor, minority campuses where obesity rates and diabetes risk are higher. A typical school in the trial is White Elementary, which is just off a busy interstate highway on the city's poor east side, on a street dotted with fast-food restaurants and taquerias. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Bexar County, where the five pilot schools are located, 33 percent of children living in poverty are obese.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers warn that obesity is not always the result of children eating too many calories. \u003cbr/\u003eA previous study by the nonprofit centre reported that 44 percent of children studied consumed calories below daily minimum requirements, but nearly one-third were still obese. Seven percent screened positive for type 2 diabetes.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a news conference called ahead of the launch Julian Castro, mayor of San Antonio, says: \"This research grant today is about better being able to identify the habits of our young people and what they're eating so we can understand what adjustments we can make in the future so that our young people have healthier options to choose from in our cafeterias so that families and parents better understand what their children are eating, maybe what they should be eating and what they should be staying away from and our young people themselves grow up with better habits about what they choose to consume.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor these children enjoying their lunch with their friends the calorie counting camera is just a novelty.
