\u003cbr/\u003eBaha Sleem, now 18 years old, was shot in the head during an Israeli military operation in the Old City of Nablus four years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bullet ripped through his left cheek and exited his right eye socket - taking his eyeball with him.\u003cbr/\u003eHis brother, who was with Baha at the time, was killed in an explosion.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Everything has changed since I lost my eye,\" Sleem told AP Television through an interpreter, who is also his American host.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he added: \"Even though I lost my eye, my sight, the thing I worry about the most is my older brother.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday in Long Branch, New Jersey, a team of four surgeons began their attempt to restore the young man's eye socket.\u003cbr/\u003eBaha came alone to the US, on a visa and ticket purchased by Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), a non-profit humanitarian organisation that helps provide free medical care abroad to sick or injured Arab children who need more sophisticated treatment than is available to them in the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eFour surgeons of different disciplines on Friday performed Baha's surgery in their free time, in an operating table donated by Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the first of at least two surgeries, the doctors removed a rib from Sleem's side and used it to mould a new eye socket. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Andrew Elkwood, the leader of the surgical team, said his team was familiar with the science behind the operation was cutting-edge but familiar.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's definitely cutting-edge but these are some techniques that reconstructive surgeons use frequently,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eElkwood said the main benefit Baha will get from the operation is the chance to lead a more normal life.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Under the best of circumstances his injuries will be significantly noticeable,\" said Elkwood, but \"we're hoping that he can go without an eye patch and walk down the street and not have people give him second looks, and allow him to apply for jobs and function in society without being kind of a standout or an outcast.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBaha said that in the past, his appearance had kept him from getting employment, something that became even more important when his family lost the financial support his brother lent.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am looking forward to reuniting with my family and looking for the means to help my family out,\" said Baha. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is scheduled to fly back home in autumn. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Palestine Children's Relief Fund
