then\u003cbr/\u003eMilitant students seized the US Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979, and held the US hostages in reprisal for Washington's refusal to surrender ousted Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi for trial. \u003cbr/\u003eThe shah had fled Iran earlier that year after he was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hostage crisis weakened then-President Jimmy Carter, contributing to his re-election loss to Ronald Reagan.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore winning Iran's presidential election last month, which Bush dismissed as anti-democratic, Ahmadinejad had been the ultraconservative mayor of Tehran and, his associates said, a member of the student group that planned the embassy takeover. \u003cbr/\u003eBut his associates said he opposed the plan and did not take part in holding hostages because he preferred instead to target the Soviet Embassy.\u003cbr/\u003eSix former hostages told The Associated Press they recognised Ahmadinejad from television coverage and photos after his election.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmadinejad resembles a thin, bearded man pictured on November 9, 1979, holding the arm of a blindfolded hostage and displaying him to the crowd outside the
