I have a great deal of faith in her.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Irenia Zayas, Devotee\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to church tradition, the Virgin of Charity appeared in eastern Cuba in the Bay of Nipe near Santiago in 1628.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo brothers, Rodrigo and Juan de Hoyos, mulattos of mixed white and black heritage, and Juan Moreno, a black boy of about 10, saw the image.\u003cbr/\u003eOther versions say all three witnesses were named Juan and that one was white, one was mulatto and one was black reflecting Cuba's racial makeup.\u003cbr/\u003eStruggling in a storm-tossed boat, they heard a voice declare \\\"I am the Virgin of Charity.\\\" \u003cbr/\u003eAcross the waves they spied a wooden board carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary, dressed in a yellow gown and depicted as a mulatta.\u003cbr/\u003eIn her left arm, she carried a mulatto baby Jesus. \u003cbr/\u003eIn her right hand, she held a cross. \u003cbr/\u003eWhat are said to be the same statue and board remain on display in a basilica built in the saint's honour in the town of Cobre, just outside Santiago.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e \\\"This is an elegant expression of how the Christian faith is present in the tradition of our people.
